A top-five player on my board, Downs is a culture changer and the perfect player to usher in Dallas’ new Christian Parker-led defense. Downs’ play speed, processing and tackling ability are all well above average, and his nickel versatility (both physically and mentally) will make him a difference-maker — especially in a Vic Fangio-inspired scheme.

Day 3 pick who could surprise: LT Overton, edge, Alabama

Five of Dallas’ first six picks were spent on defense. Though Overton failed to live up to the early-round hype he had entering the season, he is a toolsy big man with gap-sound principles and long arms to own the point of attack.

As a fan I’m happier than I’ve been in some time. I refuse to get sucked in “this year feels different” trap, but at least this offseasons moves seem to be aligned with each other instead of just a sequence of collecting players.

Therefore I vow not to complain for a good couple of weeks!

Yeah I agree. Just acknowledging that Overton was a highly considered prospect and had a disappointing year. Most mocks had Manning and Nussmeier going 1-2 and 5 QB’s going in the first round.

These mock drafters literally change their mock draft up until the day of the draft. It's just interesting to see the early ones bc lord knows I don't have time to follow the careers of thousands of college players. It helps narrow the focus. There are already 2027 mock drafts being posted.

I am a fan of the Overton pick. I'm glad Brugler agrees.

He is not ever going to be a double-digit sack guy, but in this system he will have a very specific role and he will do it well.
He is the kind of guy that a good defense needs. Does the dirty work, only took a 4th to nab, will probably never get a huge contract, but will play the run well, push the pocket back, pick up a few sacks, and be a glue guy that will have a solid 8-year career.

Agreed except for he may never get a huge contract. If Osa can dupe Jerry into signing one, anything is possible with this defensive line.

I think Overton ceiling is Marcus Spears. He will take a year to reach it if he can.
