Brugler: Skattebo runs 4.65 at Pro Day

Plus, defensive players are faster these days.

Pass.
Most every draft projection I’ve seen had Skattebo rated a 5th/6th so not sure where people are coming up with 3rd. At best he’s a #3 on the depth chart with his value being 3rd down back in pass protection for his receiving ability!

I think we knew that he wasn't going to run away from anyone. For a back like him, I think initial burst is more important. Can he get into and through the hole quickly? Most top backs average in the 4- and 5-yard range, so it's really a question whether he can find and hit the hole quick enough to make that average on the front end because he's not going to get it with home-run runs.

Vision, balance and burst IMO are all more important than 40 time, especially for a power runner.

Everything I've seen shows second or third round, so we're looking at different projections. I'm interested in seeing where Brugler has him.

you ain't draftin' that sun devil for speed.
you draft him cause you want him to smash faces.

supposedly he ran a 4.42 in high school.

he is clearly gambling not doing either the forty or bench press

we will see how it works out; personally I think in the end all players benefit by doing all they can IF they are healthy.

I doubt he hurts his stock. Maybe he drops a few picks but I'd be really surprised to see him get past the Raider, Saints, Bears and us.

He bursted off the line and looked like it was more his long speed the last 10 yards that slowed his time, imo

Emmitt Smith ran like a 4.7 at the combine and a 4.55 at his pro day.
Emmit didn’t run a 4.7 at the combine. It’s one of those made up internet stories that have become established as true much like the gibberish that Jerry Rice ran a 4.7.
Emmitt didn’t run at the combine!
He ran a 4.52 and a 4.53 counted. He also ran a 4.48 on his 2nd run that was discounted because he rocked!
There’s a Tampa Bay times article floating around if you look hard enough!

Ohio State RB Quinshon Judkins is this generation's Marion Barber III. Judkins and Barber are nearly identical in size and weight (around 6'0" and 218 lbs), and both ran just under 4.5 in the 40-yard dash.

Cam Skattebo is much shorter (5' 9.5") and slower (4.65 40 time). Even though I said Skattebo is similar to Bo Scarbrough, that is a disservice to Scarbrough who was much taller (6'1") and faster (4.52 40 time). As equal in 40 time, Skattebo is equal to Mike Alstott. They both timed their 40 yard dash at 4.65. Only difference is Alstott was much bigger (6'1", 247 lbs).

Cam Skattebo is simply too short (5' 9.5", 219 lbs) and slow (4.65) to be a full-time power back against today's much faster NFL defenses. He likely will be a late Day 3 draft pick and limited in use.

His time is pretty much expected - still a good player.

I’d roll the dice in the 6th and pair him with someone like Harvey in the 3rd.

Thunder and lightning.

I don't know how Skattebo's career will turn out, but I don't think comparing size and 40 time is the best way to compare backs. There's a whole lot of other stuff that is more important. How quickly does the back see the hole? How quickly does he hit the hole? Can he make himself skinny to slip through creases? How is his contact balance? Etc.

I'm not saying I know the answers to those questions. I'm just not sure that 40 time and size are going to be the main factors that determine what kind of career he has.
