I think they don't use a premium pick on a WO. They already spent a premium pick in this draft on Mingo. Picking a WO number one would show they messed up by trading for Mingo. If the Penn State TE is still there they take him. Heck, Witten might have whispered to Jerry that that TE is far better coming out of college then he Witten was coming out of Tennessee.

I agree but do you pass on a higher-graded offensive player for the sake of drafting defense? It appears we are drafting in the range where the players with true 1st grades bottom out. We could have a couple of players with 1st round grades ( last 2-3 ) but not necessarily positional needs, OL or TE for example. Do you pass on those players for DT/DE with the bottom 15 rankings?

This is why some say never pass on an elite blue chipper regardless of position.
in theory I agree, and for most teams and in most instances. But with the Cowboys, and this iteration of the Cowboys, they need defense. They've needed defense. Yes I'd draft for need in that situation, even knowing how it typically pans out and that it's bad strategy. It's the bed they've made though.

Passing on a WR early bc if Mingo would be complete insanity…but we are talking about the Jones.

This.

I get that a good RB can help take pressure off of a defense, but this is the year that you can trade down and get a very good DT. Mazi is a bust. Go get a good DT, gather another 2nd or 3rd for the trade down. Then address RB, LB, DE, WR in that order.

Excellent strategy. It would be nice if the owner would stop trading 4th round picks for 3rd string QB’s and 5th on the depth chart WR’s.
