Bryant probably will make first start against Steelers
Friday, November 12, 2004
Coach Butch Davis said "there's a good possibility" that Antonio Bryant will make his first start in a Browns uniform Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bryant has six catches for 69 yards in the two games since joining the Browns in the trade with the Dallas Cowboys for Quincy Morgan. Bryant's last game with the Cowboys was against the Steelers. He had one catch for 22 yards.

Bryant played his college ball at the University of Pittsburgh.

He will get the starting assignment opposite Dennis Northcutt because Andre Davis and Andre King will not play because of injuries. King suffered a high ankle sprain against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Davis missed the Philadelphia game with a turf toe injury. He suffered a similar injury on his other foot against the Baltimore Ravens.

No interference:

NFL officials do not get all their calls right, but the league does a decent job of fessing up to errors in weekly reports to their coaches.

Upon further review, the league informed the Browns this week that Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis, in fact, did not interfere with tight end Aaron Shea on the game's final pass at the goal line. The ball skipped off Shea's hands and was intercepted and returned 106 yards by safety Ed Reed for the final points in Baltimore's 27-13 win.

The Browns contended after the game that Shea was being dragged down by Lewis and should have been flagged for interference.

"The call speaks for itself," a league spokesman said.

Yo, T.O.:

In discussing the Pittsburgh blitz defense on Wednesday, Jeff Garcia took a shot at Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. Perhaps Garcia was delivering a message to his nemesis, Terrell Owens.

Garcia said: "I expect them to definitely bring the heat. They're a very talented defense. They have tremendous athletes and a great scheme. They really create some confusion. Obviously we saw that, just how Philadelphia was unable to protect the quarterback.

"That was a situation where Donovan went from being used to having four or five seconds to throw the football to now all of a sudden having people in his face and realizing that the game's not as easy as he had it in his first seven or eight games, and it showed in the outcome of the game."

McNabb threw for only 109 yards and was intercepted once in the Eagles' 27-3 loss to Pittsburgh, their first of the year. Owens had seven catches for 53 yards.

Brownie bits:

Joaquin Gonzalez never spent a full practice at guard before this week. Sunday, he will make his first career start at right guard in place of injured Kelvin Garmon. "It fits me well," Gonzalez said. "Physically, you're facing bigger guys, but they can't run outside of you." . . . Coach Davis said that punter Derrick Frost made 25 full-speed punts in Thursday's practice and shows no effects after suffering ankle and knee sprains on his left [plant] leg in the Baltimore game. . . . Receiver Frisman Jackson said that Garcia's play against Baltimore was "Jeff being Jeff." Asked to explain, he said: "Gutsy, never giving up, playing 100 percent. I've seen the guy in the locker room, he's exhausted because he leaves everything on the field. I think he's a great quarterback."

Ryan's song:

Newly arrived punter Ryan Dutton watched the Browns' 27-13 loss to Baltimore from his home in suburban Sacramento, Calif. His thoughts on the 7-yard punt by Derrick Frost, who beat him out in training camp?

"Every great punter, even Ray Guy, has had it happen. How you come back determines what happens next," Dutton said.
