Today's column in the Blue Star Times:

"What is it? What’s it do? How does it work?

Each snap of the football is creating more questions than answers as this Cowboys season reveals itself in 2014. Fans of this perennial 8-8 machine are trying to figure out what’s up. It’s like a first date with an old flame that went blonde and had some work done. What have we here?"

I was thinking more by the end of Game 5 or sooner but he's going with Game 6:

The gravity of Dallas’ reality won’t hit until the final whistle in Seattle in a few weeks. By then, the Cowboys will have faced Brees’ offensive wizardry, Houston’s defensive front, and Seattle’s hellishly obnoxious confines. By then, there will be no more unanswered questions regarding Romo, the defense, or this year’s prospects. She’ll be what she is.

Really tough to say at this point. I get what your saying, but the Cowboys looked much the same at about this point last year. 1 and 1. Beat what turned out to be a terrible Giants team, thought to be better than they were, and got beat by 1 point at the hands of the Chiefs, who turned out to be better than we thought. Therein is the issue with any conclusions you might draw...we still don't know how good or bad the teams the Cowboys have played are yet and probably won't have any idea until about the same time we know who the Cowboys are.

The Saints, for now, will be the Cowboys next big test. Not discounting the Rams, but we have a better idea of who the Saints are then we do the Rams. If our defense can keep Brees in check then i might be more inclined to believe this defense truly has improved.

No, a year ago, it was Romo flinging it all over the field and the defense giving up 500+ yards and points by the bushel.

In Week 2 last year we gave up 313 yards and 17 points to a bad offensive team in KC.

In Week 2 this year we gave up 314 yards and 10 points to a bad offensive team in Tenn. The only real difference was the goal line stand in the 4th Q this year, and TN should be kicking themselves for throwing it 4 times on that series considering they were running for 6+ YPC.

I'm with jday, we don't know much yet IMO, especially since the SF game was largely over before it started.

Romo certainly looked better then he does now, but I didn't know that is what you meant by "different."

As for the defense, they were still an unknown quantity as they are today - against the Giants they allowed 31 points, but they held the Chiefs to 17 points.

Like last year, we are already seeing several injuries, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Hopefully, Durant and McClain injuries aren't more serious than what the Cowboys are letting on or they don't have "a set back" like we saw several times last year.

Given the win against the Titans and how they won, it's hard not to have a sunny disposition right now. But dependent on how/if the Cowboys win against the Rams, that could all change in a hurry.

Nice write up, Erod. However, I am still going to hold my opinion about our D for a little longer. I will agree that the seem better but we don't have enough games yet to see if they've finally turned the corner after how many years of bad performance. Our offense worries me a bit. Does it seem to you like this offense is running at will on people? Even when the box is loaded, we are still running it down their throats. Again it's too early to really tell but if that is the case...that is what's going to make me giddy. If we can ride Murray for another 3 to 4 weeks, it's possible Romo could be in a lot better position to get healthier. Now that would be a sight.

Actually if you go back an watch the game it did look different. We ran the ball and continued to do so. That is different than we've done in a very very long time. We really didn't leave it. Yes, we do continue to find ways to beat ourselves and we did in that first game but go back and watch. and do it without emotion.

Nice read, erod. I tend to think that the thing that makes it feel different is the significantly lower expectations coming into the season compared to the last few years. By and large I think we're still an 8-8 type team this year, but everyone and their mother expected 4-12, 5-11, etc.

Now that it's becoming more clear that we probably aren't the worst team in the league, folks might be thinking that we're doing better than we should be, or over achieving. But I think we're right where we should be right now.

That was Romo who did that. More was going on and it's too bad it went right over your head. Keep on your path...meanwhile, the real football talk continues without you...
