VanRam, manager of the Rams' SB Nation site Turf Show Times writes that reports have surfaced that the Cowboys and Rams are talking about trading their first round picks. The Rams hold the 14th pick, and could be willing to move up, particularly if Julio Jones falls to the No. 9 spot.

According to ESPN's Todd McShay via Rotoworld, there is a chance that the Rams could move up in the draft to get their the talented wide receiver..

ESPN's Todd McShay said on SportsCenter Friday that he's heard rumblings around the league that the Rams are angling to trade up for the No. 9 overall pick in the draft.

If the Rams really are thinking about this, they are stupid, because now every picking at about 4 through 8 gets to start rumors that they're interested in Jones to try to fool the Rams into trading up for their pick instead.

I never believe any of these rumors, but I could see how this one could make sense. Unless there is a big time qb there at 10, the skins are going to take a WR, because my high school team had more talent than they currently have at that position. Makes sense the rams want to jump them.
But I wonder if we would only consider it if there are still a couple of good tackles left on the board.

Similar to what we did when we traded down when Stephen jackson was still on the board a few years ago. According to Parcells, we only did it because there were still a couple of really good RB's left, and we felt we could still move down and nab one. It turns out we didn't get a very good one though.

I think that if one of the top 2 QBs or WRs are gone, then the Skinz probably try and trade down. An edge rusher to bookend with Orakpo or a dominating NT could be options but they have massive needs all across the OL. Would make a lot of sense for them to trade down if they could.

If the Boys don't see much of a difference between Tyron Smith, Carimi, Castonzo then they should definitely trade down. I'd imagine if we traded to 14, we'd have a list of 6 guys we'd like just about equally. Tyron Smith, Gabe Carimi, Anthony Castanzo, JJ Watt, Aldon Smith, Cam Jordan. Not bad, I'd be pleased with any of those players...Chances are, one or two of these players will be there

Let's see:

1. CAR - Newton
2. DEN - Dareus
3. BUF - Miller
4. CIN - Gabbert
5. ARI - Quinn
6. CLE - AJ Green
7. SF - Peterson
8. TEN - Fairley
9. STL - Jones
10. WAS - Locker
11. HOU - A. Smith
12. MIN - Ty. Smith
13. DET - Prince
14. ???

Still available would be Carimi, Castonzo, JJ Watt and Jordan. I'd be pretty content with any of those 4 players. Jerry might fancy another trade down as well from 14, since teams are gonna want to jump Miami--who I believe is going to take Mallett.

Agreed.

I just don't like Castanzo very much.

The one offensive tackle I really do like is Gabe Carimi. A lot of folks wouldn't like it, but if you tell me you could plug him in at RT and be there for the next 10-12 years, then that's value at #14.

If it involves getting an additional pick like a 3rd rounder, all the better.

Also, I resisted it at first because it involved too many moving parts, but I'm warming up to the idea of moving back into the end of the 1st round to take an OT like Sherrod or OL like Pouncey.

If you trade down and only get one of those guys and a 3rd pick, you failed. You had better at least walk away with Aldon Smith if not Tyron Smith. The drop off from Tyron Smith to the other tackles and DEs is fairly large.

But if the coaches don't see that much a difference between Tyron Smith and the other guys, it's a win. It all depends on what they actually think of the players.

I personally don't think it would be a failure if didn't land Tyron Smith but instead ended up with Carimi and an extra pick (which could conceivably be used to get back into the first round). Tyron isn't gonna play LT for us, we already have one. So if the coaches think that as RTs, there is not that big of a difference between Smith and Carimi--and right now, there definitely is not, since Carimi outperformed Smith as a tackle in college--then it just makes sense to trade back.

I find the whole 'Tyron or Aldon Smith has the most upside' argument weak. JJ Watt has tons of upside. Athletically, he tested through the roof and has only been playing DE for two years now. Stands to reason then, that when he grows into his body and understands more about the position, that he has potential to be a dominant, disruptive player (which he already was at times in college). Solder, likewise, has only been playing his position for two years and his upside is also through the roof. And though he was a very good T in college, we hear absolutely nothing about his potential (which might even be greater than the Smiths'). Cam Jordan, too, has tons of athletic ability and may only be scratching the surface of his playing potential. I can't understand why only Tyron Smith is considered to have the most athletic upside when there are plenty of other players who arguably performed better than he did in college AND have the same superior athletic ability at their positions AND the necessary football makeup to succeed

I don't think anyone who does this for a living (for the NFL) doesn't see a big difference between Tyron Smith and everyone else. There is basically one touted future LT in this draft. It isn't the other guys.

He isn't going to play LT for us *THIS* year. The Cowboys (or any NFL team) doesn't just look at this year.

If we trade back to 14 and dont get Tyron Smith or Aldon Smith then its a big fail. We need a RT and thats what I want in the 1st. If we trade back to 14 and Tyron Smith is gone then we fail if we take any other RT at 14.

Now if we trade back to 18 and get a extra 2nd then I'm ok with it.
Trade back to 14 add extra 3rd and 4th round picks. Both Smiths are gone trade back to 18 and pick up a 2nd, that will work.

I keep hearing this and understand why people bring 2004 and 2009 drafts up as examples, however people need to put them in context. We traded down 21 selections, completely out of the 1st round in 2004. 2009, we traded down 24 selections, completely out of the 2nd round.

Nobody is talking about trading down that many picks or completely out of a round. That is just plain stupid because you don't know who would be available at that point. Trading down a handfull of picks, you pretty much know who would be available and might still be able to grab the person you want while acquiring an extra pick in the process.

If you want a RT in the draft and have Smith, Castonzo, Carimi, and Sherrod around the same level, trading down 5 picks almost guarantees you grab one in addition to adding another potential starter later in the draft. Dropping down 21 or 24 picks almost guarantees you miss out on every single one of those guys.
