Friday is mock draft day here on BTB and we have 12 of the freshest and juiciest mocks handpicked for your mock draft pleasure.
In today's mock draft round-up, we look at 12 of the latest mocks published over the last five days, including mocks from CBSSports, NFL.com, ESPN, SB Nation and many others.
This latest crop of mocks is not a friendly place for quarterbacks as just one of the 12 mocks has the Cowboys picking a QB.
We'll see if this is just a momentary lapse of reason, if it's the final cut for QBs, or whether the draft analyst's views are just obscured by pre-Combine clouds.
For now, all the mock draft goodness is summarized below, and there's a poll at the end as well.
Myles Jack, LB, UCLA
NFL.com (Jeremiah), Feb 16 The Cowboys are in a great spot to draft Tony Romo's successor, but they could opt to load up and make a championship run in 2016.SB Nation (Kadar), Feb 15 Other than Sean Lee, the Cowboys don't have much in terms of linebackers. In Dallas, Jack can be a sensation. He's a very good athlete with range and speed. Taking a quarterback at No. 4 wouldn't help Dallas as much in 2016 as a linebacker like Jack would.
CSN (Standig), Feb 15 The Cowboys went from the list of Super Bowl contenders to the NFC East basement because of Tony Romo's injury, which is why it's possible Jerry Jones spends a first rounder on a passer of the future. For now, how about upgrading a pass rush in need ever since DeMarcus Ware left town. Jack had surgery on his torn ACL in September. Those future medical exams will determine whether anyone will spend a top-10 pick on the athletic freak.
DraftAce (McCrystal), Feb 15 Rolando McClain is a free agent, Sean Lee is injury prone. The Cowboys strength is their defense but there are enough reasons to be concerned about the linebacker position to snap the versatile Jack.
Jalen Ramsey, CB/S, Florida State
Drafttek, Feb 19 Cornerbacks with size are coveted in the NFL for two reasons: 1) WRs are bigger and 2) They set a solid edge defending the run. Dallas has a similar athlete in 2015 first-rounder Byron Jones; it would be interesting to bookend these young players at CB early and then combine them as a top safety tandem in the future.NFL.com (Zierlein), Feb 18 Ramsey is viewed as a safety by many NFL teams, but whether he's a cornerback or a safety, he's a premium athlete with range and cover skills, which is something Dallas could use. His name will be red-hot after he smashes it at the combine.
Draftbreakdown (LaPan), Feb 18 After hitting on a prospect such as Byron Jones in 2015, the Cowboys go back into the defensive backfield and take another athletic defensive back. Ramsey can play cornerback, but will likely transition to safety in the NFL. His addition will help add to a struggling defensive backfield in Dallas.
Yahoo (Edholm), Feb 17 Byron Jones looks like a fixture at safety, and the Cowboys have to realize that Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr are not feasible options at corner. This is a young, emerging defense that needs a big boost in the playmaking department. They forced a mere 11 turnovers last season, and though Ramsey had zero interceptions last season he was always around the ball despite teams often throwing away from his side.
Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio State
EDS Football (Hanson), Deb 19 If it weren't for injuries -- or the same injury, multiple times -- to Tony Romo, the Cowboys wouldn't be picking this high. While the front office could view this as a rare opportunity to get a franchise quarterback as his long-term replacement and an upgrade to his backup, I think it's just as likely that the team goes with a prospect like Bosa that can make an immediate impact. The son of a former first-round pick, Bosa had 51.0 tackles for loss and 26.0 sacks in his three seasons with the Buckeyes. Even with the high-profile and controversial signing of Greg Hardy, who becomes a free agent this offseason, the Cowboys generated only 31 sacks, tied for 25th in the NFL.NFL.com (Reuter), Feb 17 If the Cowboys decide not to re-sign free agent Greg Hardy, they would love to find Bosa and his stellar all-around game awaiting their call.
CBSSports (Brugler),
Feb 15 The Cowboys need to address the defensive line this offseason and if Bosa is still available at pick No. 4, I don't think he'll still be around at pick No. 5. Bosa would be an ideal fit at left end in coordinator Rod Marinelli's scheme with Demarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory rushing off the right side.
Jared Goff, QB, California
ESPN (Kiper), Feb 18 This is going to be a fascinating situation. On one hand, the Dallas front office isn't the least bit delusional if they look at the roster with a healthy Tony Romo and believe they can compete for a playoff spot, which makes it harder to take a QB who might not see the field for a couple of years. But ... let's not forget that they need to upgrade the backup QB situation, period. That's what derailed them last season when Romo was out. Tough call, especially if Goff is the top QB on their board and he's available here. And now for a look at some of the prospects that might fall the Cowboys' way later in the draft. The table below summarizes the first four rounds of four different mock drafts, three of which have the Cowboys picking a QB. Let us know in the attached poll which of these mocks you like the most.
