The Cowboys failed to get it done last week, but they still hold some clinching scenarios.
The Dallas Cowboys got a little help last week when the Green Bay Packers beat the Seattle Seahawks, but they failed to take advantage of it when they lost to the New York Giants. They get a second bite at the apple (not the Big Apple) when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night. Dallas has three possible scenarios left after already clinching a playoff berth. They can clinch the NFC East, they can secure a first-round bye, or they can grab it all by getting home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Here are the scenarios for this week:
Dallas clinches NFC East division and a first-round bye with:
- DAL win + NYG loss or tie OR
- DAL tie + NYG loss
Dallas clinches home-field advantage throughout NFC playoffs with:
DAL win + NYG/DET tie
That makes it kind of simple because the Detroit Lions are travelling to play the Giants at 1 PM ET on FOX on Sunday. So that’s the main game to watch this weekend besides the Cowboys and Bucs affair on Sunday night. Basically, we are hoping for the least likely of situations, a tie between the Giants and the Lions. More realistically, we are rooting for the Lions to take out New York and get us the NFC East title and a first-round bye, as long as the Cowboys take care of business later that night.
Both of those teams are also playing for their own playoff berths.
Detroit clinches NFC North division with:
- DET win + GB loss or tie OR
- DET tie + GB loss + MIN loss or tie
New York clinches a playoff berth with:
NYG win + WAS loss + MIN loss or tie + GB loss or tie
