Adding A 'Look Here' Element To The Dallas Pass Rush.

All signs are pointing up for the Dallas Cowboys when it comes to rushing the passer. Late last season DeMarcus Lawrence started putting it all together and it appears that he might be ready to assume at least part of the responsibilities once held by the other DeMarcus that once played for the team. The team took matters a step further when they went out and signed Greg Hardy despite serious character concerns. Having his suspension shorted to just four games will greatly boost the Dallas defense. 2015 draft addition Randy Gregory will bring something to the dance as well.

The Cowboys should be a much improved team when it gets down to pressuring opposing quarterbacks in 2015, but the above mentioned reasons are only part of the picture. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is going to have a few other tricks up his sleeve thanks to some other pieces that he did not have at his disposal last season.

Option one would be blitzing outside linebacker Sean Lee. Through 46 games Lee has yet to record his first sack as a professional player. Prior to turning professional, Lee recorded 11 sacks in 36 outings as a Penn State Nittany Lion. The ability is there, and I would not put it past the Cowboys to look for a few opportunities to get their WILL linebacker involved in the pass rush.

Another option for the Dallas defensive brain trust to consider is how to work Byron Jones' athletic ability into the equation. With Jones at safety the Cowboys will have a player that is athletic enough to rotate over and cover Orlando Scandrick's man. This would free up the Dallas cornerback to come hard on the occasional blitz from the corner. He has been good for a sack or two each season except for his rookie year, and the next one that he records will put him in double digits for his career...

Our options at DE, LB and in the secondary are considerably better this year than they've been in a long time.

Looking down the road, barring a plethora of injuries the defense should be feeling its oats in 2015. Gotta love it.

DE is going to be a strength this year for the Cowboys.

I hate the blitzing talk. The upside of coachs of Marinelli's style and pedigree is they find ways to lean on the front 4 for pressure and not compromise coverage. I would wager to say that we blitz much less next year considering the additions to the line.

Blitzing makes for an exciting offseason article but during real football can often be counter productive

Max pass rush package:
RDE Hardy
DT1T Crawford
DT3T Mincey
LDE DLaw
SLB Gregory

I agree, but you have to blitz some to keep the offense off guard. You also take advantage of the element of surprise when you only do it occasionally. I think the amount of blitzing has a direct correlation to how well the secondary plays.

You have to really know how and when to do it. As Cowboys fans we have great examples of the do's ( Phillips 2009 defence) of utilizing a blitz supported by strong personel and in effective situations to durress and offense. And donts ( Ryans defenses) of building a scheme around blitzing and utilizing it as a base philosophy with the personel to support it.

To me, what remains to be seen is if we have the talent on the back end to support blitzing. Are our DBs competent enough to maintain coverage in a comprimised position.

The only issue with that is you would have to play Gregory as SLB and not blitz otherwise when you have this grouping in the game teams will just game plan to neuter it like quick hits, draws, screens. This formation would be the defensive equivalent of a Lance Dunbar formation on offense.

the DE's make it more difficult to run around, so I am REALLY, looking forward to see was Mr Crawford is going to do up the middle

Simple fact remains, as to a quick fix remedy as an excuse for not having success...don't discount achievement levels that player talent, schemes, and great coaching do establish.

I like X's special case front line approach. That could be both lethal and effective...

Having Gregory as an additional outside pressure does sound full of potential, and even allow Scandrick to bring top pressure with good safety play as well.

While in this package he might be listed as a SLB, he'd basically be playing a 7 or 9-tech. He would be "blitzing," but he'd start on the LOS I would think. Basically he'd be playing the same position as an OLB in a 3-4.

Target on. I so am looking forward to a developing interior line situation for Dallas.

Turnovers happen when you can get pressure without blitzing. Marinelli specializes in this.

It would be used on 3rd and long.
