Traveling around the NFL, summing up what we learned in week one.
Bradford, Vikings cruise past Saints in opener Dave Campbell,Houston Chronicle
Week one of the NFL season came closer to an end on Monday night with the Vikings hosting the Saints. (The late Monday night game remains to be played as of this writing.)
Minnesota entered the game with eyes on being the first team to host their own Super Bowl. With the defense put together by Mike Zimmer, it is not an impossible task for the Norsemen.
The core of the Vikings might be the defense, but Sam Bradford decided to make a case for the offense on the national stage of MNF.
Sam Bradford started his second season with Minnesota in style, passing for 346 yards and three touchdowns to help the Vikings beat New Orleans 29-19 on Monday night and spoil Adrian Peterson's first game with the Saints.
Welcome back AP.
Carroll’s assessment of Seahawks’ O-line from opening loss: “I’m disappointed...” Gregg Bell, News-Tribune
The Seahawks opened up the season by allowing the Green Bay defense to assert its will on Russell Wilson and the offense. Watching the contest it looked like the game was being played in the Seattle backfield more than anything else.
“Right out of the chutes, we just missed a couple opportunities to do things and made a couple mistakes, really the errors that we had. Then also, I give it to (Mike) Daniels, he played a heck of a football game. He gave us some problems and we didn’t deal with him as well as we thought we would.” - Pete Carroll
It will not be pleasant in the offensive linemen’s meeting room this week.
Hue Jackson: Rookie QB DeShone Kizer Gives Browns ‘Hope’ Daryl Ruiter, CBS Cleveland
Could there be a reason for enthusiasm on the shores of Lake Erie?
Hue Jackson thinks there is.
“He gives you an opportunity to make plays. When I looked up, the game was 21-10, and here we are in the fourth quarter with a chance to win the game late in the game and that is because of some plays he made. That is what you expect out of your quarterback. We are talking about a young rookie quarterback who is one of the youngest players in the league at that position. That is exciting for me. I think it is exciting for our organization.” - Hue Jackson
Jackson knows a thing or two about developing a quarterback, and he is playing it careful with Kizer, but the Browns coach is not shy about his optimism either. Perhaps the QB carousel is getting ready to stop in Cleveland.
Hub Arkush: Chicago Bears much better in Week 1 loss than at any time during John Fox regime Hub Arkush, Post-Star
Regardless, a loss is a loss; but the Chicago Bears have made great strides in rebuilding under John Fox. They are nowhere near ready to contend but the coach and his staff are getting more out of the limited talent available to them than what we have seen recently.
Spin it how you like but in the end it’s an absolute, there are no moral victories.
At the end of the day, though, against Atlanta, the Bears were a much better team than we’ve seen at any other time under Ryan Pace and John Fox, and there is one more guy who earned some props.
Give Loggains a B+ for a really nice game plan and getting the most out of his limited weapons on offense.
A rebound has to start somewhere and the Bears may have taken their first step.
