It's starting to seem like a long time ago when the Cowboys were coached by Bill Parcells. In fact it is, Parcells was hired for the 2003 season, a decade ago. He coached the Cowboys from 2003 - 2006, a total of four seasons. His record was 34-30 in Dallas, but the 0-2 in the playoffs sticks out as a huge disappointment.
Much was made about the relationship between Parcells and owner Jerry Jones. How much did they clash on issues? Was a difference of opinion about Terrell Owens as big as it seemed? Just how much did Jerry interfere with the Tuna?
We'll probably never know the full story, but now that Bill Parcells is headed to the Hall of Fame, he's speaking out about some of his former coaching stops, and lays down some commentary about Jerry Jones. When asked about the perception of Jerry clashing with head coaches, he had this to say.
"Oh yeah, definitely. I think it’s distorted," Parcells said. "I think there’s a definite misperception. I just think everyone thinks things are a certain way. I didn’t see it to be that way. I think Jerry is a good businessmen and a good listener. What you have to do is make sense to him. You’ve got to make sense to him. If he thinks you’re making sense, he’ll alter his opinion. I enjoyed him. I like him. I like him a lot."
"I liked my experience there," Parcells said. "It didn’t turn out perfect from a record-standpoint. I understand all of that. But I learned a lot and I enjoyed working there.
"Jerry and I are pretty good friends. I don’t know whether or not people know that. We talk a little bit. I wouldn’t say frequently. We talk a little bit. We talked recently. It’s good. And I’m close with Stephen [Jones], too. I enjoyed working there with the Joneses. They were supportive and tried to help."
So what do you think? Is Parcells just being kind because he doesn't want any controversy or ruffled feathers heading into his Hall of Fame induction ceremony? Do you think he actually does have a healthy respect for Jerry? Maybe it's more that he appreciates all the Jerry does for his team and organization, except for some issues around player personnel.
