Dallas suffers its first major setback during OTAs.

According to a report from DallasCowboys.com, third round draft pick DT Maliek Collins broke a bone in his right foot during OTAs and has already had surgery. He will miss the remainder of OTAs and the minicamp, and is expected to be available during the latter part of training camp. The projected recovery is 10 to 12 weeks, according to the report.

This continues a string of injuries to rookie defensive linemen for the Cowboys, as both DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory were hampered by injury issues during their first seasons with the team. With the questions about the pass rush in Dallas, this is certainly a bit of a setback, but the Cowboys have a large number of options still to work with.

Collins' injury is disappointing on several levels. It sets back his development, and comes with him as the last rookie to not have signed a contract. Avoiding injuries is always a priority during OTAs, but that is always easier said than done. His contributions as a rookie pass rusher were not likely to have been large, given the history of rookies on the defensive line in the league, but he will be missed, and will have a lot of catching up to do once he is healthy.
