It is a move that has been overdue.

The Dallas Cowboys announced that former safety Darren Woodson has been selected for inclusion in the Ring of Honor. The announcement was made at the conclusion of the early walkthrough practice during team's training camp in Oxnard. It is a move that, in the eyes of many, should have come earlier given his accomplishments on the field.

A five-time Pro Bowler, Woodson is the only player in Cowboys history to play for five head coaches (Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey, Dave Campo and Bill Parcells.) He finished his career with 1,350 tackles, surpassing Lee Roy Jordan (1,236) in 2012.

Woodson was a rarity, a safety who could shut down receivers. He was a hard hitter who also had cornerback-like coverage skills. The Cowboys could play him close to the line without making them excessively vulnerable to the pass because of his ability to carry a receiver out of the slot. He was one of the best safeties in the league throughout his twelve year career, and was rewarded with five trips to the Pro Bowl and three All Pro selections. He helped the Cowboys win their three Super Bowl championships in the nineties, and he also received the Ed Block Courage award in 1998 and the Bart Starr Man Of The Year award in 2001.

Just as there has been some sentiment that Woodson should have been in the ROH already, he is also seen as being overlooked by the Hall of Fame. Charles Haley was finally selected for a bust in Canton after he got the nod for the ROH in 2011. Perhaps this will make the difference for Woodson as well.
