It is still early in the college season and marquee matchups are hard to find but we have dug deep and found a few games that should feed your need for football.
The top teams in college football are for the most part still playing tune up games as they get ready for the conference slates that will determine their eventual fate. That makes finding showdowns between these top squads a little more difficult than it will be a month or so down the road. Worry not folks, BTB has been able to dig deep into the college schedule and we are here to help you find some good games to enjoy on your Saturday afternoon. The games we have found will hold you over until the NFL action gets under way in full force on Sunday.
- Houston @ Louisville ESPN3 12:00 Eastern
If you like wide open offensive action this game looks to be perfect for you. The Houston Cougars feature a wide open offense under new head coach Tom Herman. They put 52 points on the board last week in the season opener. Bobby Petrino likes to open things up in much the same fashion with his Louisville Cardinals. The difference in this one could come down to Petrino's defense. The Cards like to play takeaway in the secondary, three picks last week in a loss to Auburn, and they are known for generating heat on the passer. If they can get to the quarterback this week and make plays in the secondary I expect my alma mater to come up on the short end of the stick.
- Oklahoma (19) @ Tennessee (23) ESPN 6:00 Eastern
There are a few meetings between ranked teams this weekend and that action begins with a contest between two fairly even teams. The road team should be a slight favorite in this one, but Neyland Stadium can be a tough place for opponents to play. With this being the biggest non-conference game the Vols have played in a decade, Knoxville is going to be rocking. I am going out on a limb here by taking the home team in this one.
- Oregon (7) @ Michigan State (5) ABC 8:00 Eastern
This one is the game of the week, and it should be worth waiting all week for. Last year it was the Quack Attack that turned this meeting into a statement game as they marched (waddled?) their way to the National Championship game. The Spartans are looking for revenge this time around. The experts are calling this one dead even. From my perspective Sparta has a slight edge on defense. Last week Oregon struggled to stop the pass while State was dominate in the pass rush and run defense. This game is going to be decided based on who can make the big plays, and it would not shock me at all if that biggest one of the night came from one of the special teams units.
- LSU (14) @ Mississippi State (25) ESPN 9:15 Eastern
Not to be left out, the SEC gives us the first meeting between ranked conference schools of the season. Dak Prescott and the Bulldogs are back for another season, and for the Tigers to leave Starkville with a W they are going to have to shut down the Mississippi State quarterback. That means they are going to have to stop a quarterback who hits you like a fullback when he runs the ball and who can throw effectively while in the grasp of a defensive lineman. Les Miles and the LSU defensive staff have focused all week on tackling technique in the hopes that it will pay off. There is only one way to find out, tune in and watch for yourself. My money is on Miles and the boys from the bayou this time around.
There you have a run down of the best action Saturday has to offer. There are not a lot of big name contests going on, but the ones that are out there should all be good ones. It is time to ice down a few beverages, light up the grill, and get set to watch some gridiron action.
Enjoy!
