There’s a lot of pressure on the second-round rookie moving forward.
Early on Wednesday morning word surfaced that the Dallas Cowboys are moving on from Nolan Carroll. It’s hard to disagree with this move as Carroll has played poorly and been dealing with a concussion since the loss in Denver.
Another injury sustained by the Cowboys in Denver involved Chidobe Awuzie. Drafted by the Cowboys in the second round back in April, Chido has been dealing with hamstring issues dating back to the preseason.
In fact Chidobe Awuzie left the game in Denver, missed the game in Arizona, and left the game against the Packers all due to the dreaded h-word. This is certainly frustrating for Chidobe and all involved, and it’s starting to teeter into the territory of irresponsible.
Nolan Carroll’s departure means the Cowboys currently have five cornerbacks on their roster: Orlando Scandrick, Anthony Brown, Jourdan Lewis, Bene Benwikere, and the aforementioned Awuzie. If Chidobe can’t play in or finish games, it leaves the Cowboys vulnerable in the secondary depth-wise.
What’s more is that Dallas was looking to incorporate Awuzie’s position flexibility this past Sunday against Green Bay. Chido has the ability to play safety, some would like to see him there more often, so the Cowboys were prepared to play around with this, so much so that they left Kavon Frazier inactive.
If Chidobe Awuzie is being counted on at cornerback, safety, or wherever you want to put him, it’s hard to count on him in general. This isn’t to say that Carroll shouldn’t be moved on from, and Chido could still turn things around health-wise, but this is a precarious position to find yourself in.
To say the Cowboys are forced to rely on Chidobe seems strong, but the reality is that he’s a second-round player and talent, and he can be extremely useful. It makes sense to end the Nolan Carroll experiment, but if the plan is to lean more on Chidobe Awuzie then there need to be proper expectations and contingencies to go along with that plan.
