Unlike last week, we have several meetings between ranked combatants on tap for this Saturday.
Match Ups Among Ranked Teams
Alabama (2) @ Mississippi State (17), 3:30 PM Eastern, CBS
The twice beaten Bulldogs will be looking for some payback when the Tide rolls into the Magnolia State. Last year Mississippi State was undefeated and atop the college football world before they paid a visit to Tuscaloosa. They left the stadium with their National Championship dreams in ashes. Now Alabama is the one with big aspirations and the folks in Starkville have long memories. This one should be an enjoyable match up.
Memphis (21) @ Houston (24), 7:00 PM Eastern, ESPN2/WatchESPN
Everyone should tune in to this one. Your favorite U of H alum will be somewhere in the crowd and she should be easy to recognize (I will be the one in Cougar red.) Both schools are in the hunt for the American Athletic Conference crown and a possible shot at being the "Group of Five" representative in the New Year's Day festivities. The stakes are high, and the game promises to be a high-scoring affair
Oklahoma (12) @ Baylor (6), 8:00 PM Eastern, ABC/WatchESPN
The offensive fireworks in this game may make the Memphis - Houston contest look like a defensive struggle. Both of these Big 12 schools can light it up in a hurry. Oklahoma has had its difficulties against the Bears of late. Baylor can score on anyone, but the Sooners seem to really bring out the best in Art Briles' offense. With no playoff in the Big 12 and TCU taking a hit last week, this might be the best that it gets for the conference. The folks in Waco are hoping for a big showing, otherwise the Big 12 may be on the outside looking in at the playoffs when the final pairings are announced.
Other Contests Of Note
North Carolina State @ Florida State (16), 12:30 PM Eastern, ESPN3/WatchESPN
The Wolfpack always seem to be a thorn in the side of the Seminoles. The two schools are not really close in how they are viewed as football powers, but that belies the success the folks from North Carolina have had against the Noles. They play tough in this contest, and I know a couple FSU fans who look at this annual affair with trepidation. Look for a good contest.
Arkansas @ LSU (9), 7:15 PM Eastern, ESPN/WatchESPN
The Razorbacks are on a hot streak. After a 2-4 start they have reeled off three straight victories and they are hoping to cash in on an LSU team that is rebounding from a loss to Alabama last week. The Hogs will become bowl eligible with another win. If LSU does not recover from last week and the Razorbacks are able to keep momentum rolling that could happen this weekend.
Oregon @ Stanford (7), 7:30 PM Eastern, Fox
The Ducks are not the team they were with that guy that went to Philly a couple seasons back, but they are still a good football team. The Cardinal are a very good football team on the verge of being great. Both have something to prove in this match up. To add to the importance of the contest, Stanford is looking to fight its way into the National Championship conversation.
Minnesota @ Iowa (5), 8:00 PM Eastern, Big 10 Network
For the Hawkeyes every game is a big one. Ohio State was assumed to be the odds-on favorite to win the conference and contend to repeat as national champions. They are doing that, but Iowa is in the same conversation. Tune in and see if they can fight their way into the title hunt.
