After a long week of work, you’ve earned a Saturday in front of the tube and a frosty beverage.
BIG 10 Trap Game: #24 Michigan @ #5 Wisconsin- 12 ET FOX
The Badgers have been rolling but they’re about to roll into one of the nations’s top defenses. The Wolverines have one big problem and that’s scoring on offense. Still, it will be interesting to see how this one plays out:
Don Brown's Michigan defense does not give up methodical drives. Per Football Study Hall, the Wolverines are No. 1 nationally in efficiency. Wisconsin wants to go on methodical marches. Styles make fights, and Michigan will dare Wisconsin to make big plays. This bet says the Badgers won't make enough.
The Bulldogs just ate it last week against Auburn and they were ousted from the playoff picture just like that. Kentucky isn’t really a good football team by any means but you wonder how much was taken out of the Bulldogs with that stunning defeat from the Tigers.
3) Fast start, faster slow down. The 2017 Georgia Bulldogs have been really good in the first quarter. We’ve scored in the opening 15 minutes in every game. In half the games, we have multiple 1Q scores. And through the first half of the season, the 2nd quarter has been as good or better. But after throwing up 20 points against Missouri in the frame after the first, the 2ndquarter scoring has been reduced to a lone touchdown (versus South Carolina). Nothing against Florida (and I think the entire fanbase pointed that out after extrapolating the 1Q score,) and nothing against Auburn.
The Sun Devils are on a losing streak but they are heavily favored in this matchup. However, it has been easy for them against the Beavers in a decade. For the fans, this could be a nice high-scoring affair:
Arizona State will play Oregon State on Saturday and even though the Sun Devils are the favorites, the Devils haven’t beaten the Beavers in Corvallis in over 10 years. Oregon State’s secondary is one of the worst in the country as the Beavers are tied as the No. 87 passing defense in the country and No. 116 overall defense. The Sun Devils aren’t that much better on defense as they have the No. 111 total defense. It’s going to come down to who can produce more points on the offensive end because there is going to be little to no defense in this game.
Stanford is favored in this one obviously but they haven’t exactly been beacons of consistency. Cal may actually be able to fight back in this one and put up some points but the Cardinal’s running game will be a load:
Obviously, you know about Bryce Love. He pretty much played on one ankle against Washington and still lit up the stat sheet. He’s a beast. Aside from him, the guy to look out for on offense is J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. He grabs about any ball that comes his way and finished with 130 yards against the Huskies. His height is difficult to defend, and Cal will need to shut him down, especially in the red zone, if they want to keep it close.
This game will feature a lot of NFL scouts as the two quarterbacks look to be future high draft picks. There are some other players to watch on both sides of the ball but everyone is here for the quarterbacks.
Sam Darnold vs Josh Rosen
While they won’t line up and play one v one this weekend, this matchup has been highly anticipated by most. Two young, talented quarterbacks with the potential to have lasting legacies in both college and professional ball. Many NFL scouts will fill the seats to watch the gunslingers face off. So far this season Rosen has completed 62 percent of his passes (237 of 381) for 3094 yards with 21 touchdowns and only nine interceptions. Darnold has completed 63 percent of his passes (243 of 383) for 3198 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. While both will deny the magnitude of this game, deep down you know each understands the opportunity presented to them. Expect both to ball out on Saturday.
