After a long week of work, you’ve earned a Saturday in front of the tube and a frosty beverage
Red River Rivalry- #12 Oklahoma vs. Texas 3:30 ET on ESPN
After the Sooners took the loss against Iowa State in Norman, they can’t feel too confident against the Longhorns. Texas is 2-0 in the BIG 12 and they have been especially good on the defensive side of the ball. Baker Mayfield will be looking for redemption after the last loss took them out of Title contention for now.
This year, Oklahoma (4-1) is coming off an embarrassing loss to Iowa State while Texas (3-2) enters the game with some momentum. After a demoralizing Week 1 loss to Maryland, Tom Herman and company righted the ship and have started to play some really good football of late. This is especially true on the defensive side of the ball. Over the last three games, the Longhorn defense has given up only 34 points.
The Hurricanes are riding high after defeating the Florida State Seminoles. They’ll be looking to make it 5-0 against Georgia Tech this week. However, Georgia Tech has started off their season pretty well:
First, Tech won 9 games in 2016, the same amount Miami did, and I don’t know of a single Tech fan who considers last year a bad season. We even beat 3 SEC East teams. Not much has changed, and that’s been a good thing. TaQuon Marshall stepped in for 3 year starter Justin Thomas at QB, and the transition has been seamless. I still don’t know how Tech lost the opening game to Tennessee – they kicked their tail the entire game and just missed a couple field goals and had a bad turnover at the end that would’ve sealed the win. A single-point, 2OT loss to open the season is the only thing keeping Tech from being ranked probably in the 12-14 range right now.
The Tide continues to roll all over the College Football landscape and should beat the Razorbacks as well. Nick Saban is tired of media telling his team that they are good but it’s hard when they are winning like they are. One thing is certain, Alabama has one of the best teams in Saban’s tenure.
We Alabama fans are fickle, if also predictable. After two weeks of beating up Vandy and Ole Miss like Chuck Norris in a room of baddies, the Tide fan base was quite ready to crown this the best team in Nick Saban’s tenure. A week later, we play A&M and *GASP* are not quite perfect, and suddenly 50% of the fans are ready to bench our second year quarterback and reigning SEC Offensive Player of the Year in favor of a shiny freshman back up.
That said, I think it’s combination of both of what you said. On one hand, Vandy and Ole Miss were not good teams, and both gave up after getting punched in the mouth early. On the other, this Alabama team has more talent stocked up with historic recruiting classes in each of the last three years.
Georgia has been one of the best teams in college football and they still trail the Crimson Tide. This may be headed toward a big time showdown between these two in the SEC Championship. The Bulldogs believe that they are ready to take the next step but they must get past Mizzou.
Looking ahead. The difference between having a big game out of town and a big game at home can be sometimes reduced to logistics and accommodations. It’s nice to have your own locker room, but today’s big-time college football often still includes a hotel stay off-campus the night before a home game. Which leaves post-game… having to board a bus to go to the airport, or knowing that you’re an hour away from being back in your apartment with a bye week looming head of you.
All we’ve heard is that it’s next man, next play, next game. Kirby’s message has been consistent, and any player interviews have echoed these sentiments. I really want to be worried that 18-22 year olds won’t stay on message. And we’ve seen too many examples where the inexplicable happens. And Missouri can score in a hurry. But this year just seems… different.
Those are the most interesting games in week seven of college football action. Here’s the rest of the schedule. Sit back and relax for another weekend filled with football.
