I stood in the same place as pretty much everyone else, the line of thought of: he coached the average-to-bellow average Cleveland defense?

And that's a good way to start this post, as soon as he became the Defensive Coordinator on this team, I began a process of acquiring tape of games to see what his defense was all about... And wow, it's all about movement and about not showing what you really mean.

Two games stood out, the 1st reason is because they were great performances by the defense, the QBs couldn't find a comfort zone as they were always looking were the pressure would come from. And the 2nd because with the passing teams in our division (Eagles and Giants) and with the way in which our passing defense played last year, there's a big need for improvement in that area. The games were the one against the Saints in New Orleans and against the Patriots, both victories by the Browns.

So, what exactly did I chart? I went from the defensive alignment of the DLine and LBs, to the coverage of the safeties, to the unexpected blitzers, to the amount of rushers per passing play and the kind of gap responsibility.

So, let's get to it, the numbers from both games:

Interesting read, thanks.

This is music to my ears. How many times did I hear opposing QB's say, they knew our defensive coverages. We were easy to game plan against! This is one reason why our defence sucked.

To throw a potentially frozen wet blanket on the optimism, I would really like to see what happened to Ryan's defense on some of the games that Cleveland got blown up in. Granted, our personnel is head and shoulders above their's, every defense has it's weakness, but I'd like to see how offensive coordinators attacked his schemes and how they exploited the mismatches Ryan might have created.

I would not say that our defensive personnel are head and shoulders above Cleveland's. Ryan may be bringing the right scheme, but he'll need to upgrade personnel on the DL, LB corps and secondary to make it work. It will be a tall order.

They've got what, two players that could possibly challenge for a starting job here? We have got our own deficiencies, but we've got a few All-Pro strengths to work with that Rob didn't have in Cleveland.

Our problem is that we're weak in coverage thruoghout the middle of the field. We simply do not have safeties or LBs who can cover the middle zones effectively.

TEs and WRs in the slot provide consistent safety valve passes for their offenses against our defense. Ryan has to first bring in the players that will seal that gaping hole we have throughout the middle of our defense, otherwise we have mo chance, regardless of what scheme he runs.

This article intimates that there is a large portion of the present front and secondary that would require some major changes as to technique and abilities. That means some major adjustments needing to occur.

The importance of a real and pre-draft free agency is mounting here. There are some indicated changes needed along the Dallas defensive front. But worst case scenario, would show also, that a concealed and more attacking and defined assault upon an opponent improves effectiveness of that same group.

If through additions of drafted or free agent players, he is able to improve the base level talents, then Rob Ryan's defense should make a defined rise in effectiveness.

This was a good read, by the way...
