The Cowboys could use some help at cornerback and the Florida cornerback would provide an immediate boost to the position.
I love Jalen Ramsey. Admit it, you do too. When I see a mock draft where he has somehow slid to the Cowboys, I get excited. Ramsey is a great athlete. As great as it would be to draft him, I'm not holding my breath that he will be there when the Cowboys are on the clock.
The cornerback position is an area of need for the Cowboys. Orlando Scandrick will be returning from a nasty knee injury. Both Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr are only under contract for one more season - and that's assuming Carr isn't released. Both these corners have severely underperformed so it's hard to imagine the Cowboys looking at them to be the answer in the future.
With some good draft equity come April, the Cowboys have a great opportunity to get themselves one of the better college corners. But despite being one of the best CBs in the draft, Vernon Hargreaves name hasn't come very much. That is largely due to the fact that he's projected to go somewhere around ten in the draft, which is not in the proximity of where the Cowboys are drafting. But the Cowboy are no stranger to moving around in the first round. They've done it twice in the last four years. If the Cowboys don't like what they see when it's their turn to pick, they might look to trade back. That puts Hargreaves right into the center of the conversation. And with the recent news that the Cowboys are one of the teams he is visiting with, I'd say it warrants some attention.
Hargreaves is an outstanding cornerback. Ramsey may be the better athlete, but Hargreaves has the best man coverage skills in the draft. He's got sensational footwork and moves his hips extremely well. Hargreaves is a very fundamentally sound defensive back. He's got great downfield awareness and keeps his head turned around to make plays on the football. He is aggressive towards the football, but has soft hands to come away with the catch. He has ten interceptions in his three-year college career at Florida.
He's the kind of corner that the Cowboys could throw out there to match up with their opponents top wide receiver and not have to worry about him. The knock on Hargreaves is that he's not very tall, standing at just 5'10", but he has great leaping ability. Here are his measureables. As you can see, the kid can jump.
The Cowboys could move back a few spots and score themselves an extra second round pick. If that happens, Vernon Hargreaves could to be considered as one of the top candidates for that pick.
