Neither injury is serious, but the team has already made a move on the practice squad as insurance. And for Noah Brown, it may be a big opportunity.

The Dallas Cowboys came out of the season opening win over the New York Giants in pretty good health, but they were not completely unscathed. The biggest injury was to Orlando Scandrick, who is having surgery for a broken hand. He left the game after nine defensive snaps, but the secondary didn’t really miss a beat.

But two other injuries also happened, and both were to wide receivers, Terrance Williams and Brice Butler.

WR Terrance Williams has lateral ankle sprain. WR Brice Butler also has sprained ankle. Hence why WR Brian Brown re-signed to practice squad

Williams left the game briefly in the first quarter, but returned to lead the team in receiving yards. Butler had only one catch, but set up a field goal with it (and it should have set up a touchdown if not for the offensive struggles in the red zone). Now, the team has to carefully evaluate the situation for both to determine if they should play against the Denver Broncos this week. For insurance, the Cowboys have already signed Brian Brown to the practice squad, releasing Jameill Showers (indications are that they will try to bring Showers back later if he is not signed elsewhere).

But the team already has some insurance on the 53-man roster in rookie Noah Brown, whose performance in the preseason basically forced them into carrying six WRs. Now, that may pay early dividends for the team. Noah may get his first crack at the active squad if either Williams or Butler is deemed to need a game off - and if both are held out, he is certain to see the field.

It is an example of how roster churn is an ongoing and constant part of the season. And it shows how seemingly fringe decisions can suddenly become much more important than anticipated. While it looks like both Williams and Butler will be back sooner than later (and may both be available this week if they bounce back quickly), having Noah on the roster is very, very helpful already.
