The offensive line and defensive safety have bedeviled the Dallas Cowboys in recent years. The organization boasts a load of talent at other spots, but just can't seem to find the right mix of players at either of those position groups. Let's set aside the o-line for the moment and take a look at the picture at safety. The only player that seems to be a lock at the position is Barry Church. Even he has issues, he's recovering from the dreaded Achilles injury, and let's not forget that he just won the starting position last year. Church looked good until the injury, but we haven't really seen him long-term yet. Still, he's almost assuredly starting at one spot.
The other spot is the big question mark. We have a slew of contenders but no clear-cut favorite. The candidates include:
Matt Johnson - The 2012 draft pick supposedly has the ballhawking skills needed at the spot, but his entire season last year was wiped out by injury.
Will Allen - He's the one guy of the bunch with lots of experience, including in the Tampa-2 system, but has never been much more than a role player. A special teams ace, but had a successful run starting for Pittsburgh at the end of last year.
J.J. Wilcox - The surprise of minicamps and OTAs, the 2013 draft pick has been constantly around the ball. But he's a rookie and he's not even very experienced in playing safety with only one year under his belt in college.
Jakar Hamilton - A long-shot UDFA, he has impressed with his athleticism and is putting himself in the mix for a role.
Danny McCray - We saw how the position suffered when he played it last year, it's likely he's relegated to special teams if he grabs a roster spot.
Other - Eric Frampton, Jeff Heath, Micah Pellerin.
So, who ya got in the starting role next to Barry Church? Take the poll then tells us your thoughts in the comments.
