Coach Jason Garrett passed on the news today that starting left guard Nate Livings has been cleared to return to practice. In other injury news, Anthony Spencer and Tyrone Crawford both had what were termed successful surgeries. Spencer should be back in under four weeks, Crawford of course is done for the year.

Also, Mackenzy Bernadeau, Jame Hanna and Ronald Leary should be back by next week. Jeremy Parnell probably needs another week.

Ben Bass is getting a lot of love. Check out a full article on the versatile big man.

“Oh man, I thought [Ban Bass] had a really good OTAs, and I think he’s a big, good-looking athlete,” [Rod] Marinelli said. “He’s a guy who can move. What you try to do is create position flexibility, so he’s worked inside. I like him inside. I’m looking at him at some end.

“For now, he gives you a big 290-pound left end you can use in the run game. You’ve got to be careful with that approach and not give him too many things to do. You want to make him good first and then adjust. This was an opportunity to give him some work and see how he looks out there.”

Even Jason Hatcher has taken notice.

“He’s going to be the reason I’m playing for a different team next year,” said Hatcher, in the final year of a three-year, $6 million deal. “He’s coming on. He’s coming on. I’ve just got to keep my job secure and play my butt off.”

Tony Romo has a slow first day of camp returning from surgery for a cyst on his back. But Jason Garrett thinks he's starting to look right.

“Clearly, when he first started practicing, on the first day, he wasn’t quite himself,” Garrett said, looking back at the first three practices. “But the second day was better, the third day was better. He’s moving around. You see him getting away from the line of scrimmage, you see him reacting like he normally reacts.

“The ball is coming out of his hand better,” Garrett said. “You know, he hasn’t been in this environment in a little while. But he’s responded well to the work. We’ve monitored his throwing a little bit in the individual periods. He’s not getting in the exact rotation when we’re just throwing routes on air. But he’s getting a chance to throw to Miles and Dez and some of the other first-tier guys. He’s responded well to everything, and he’s getting better every day.”

Monte Kiffin relays an incident when he previously coached DeMarcus Ware, back in the 2005 Senior Bowl.

“One time, I’m coaching the defensive line and there was this guy in the roped-off area watching him practice, and DeMarcus had his hand down rushing,” Kiffin said. “This guy walked up -- and this is a guy I knew way back in college -- and he said, ‘Do you mind just standing him up for a couple of rushes?’

“It was Bill Parcells.”
