Yesterday it was reported that Nate Livings' knee injury had flared up again and that he'd need some rest. He needs more than that. Todd Archer reports that Livings will need his second surgery in six months and will likely miss at least two to four weeks. If it's the full amount, that puts him right at the start of the season. And that's the optimistic view. Livings had surgery in February but aggravated it again in OTAs. He's already missed much of training camp this year and just a couple of days after getting back on the field, he's back off. This sounds like an injury that could linger.

Given this news, it's looking almost certain that either Ronald Leary or David Arkin will be one of the starting guards in the opening game. Unless Livings makes a miraculous recovery, he won't be ready to go in the first game. In camp, Leary has see most of his action on the left side, Livings' spot, and Arkin has been the top fill-in for Mackenzy Bernadeau. So I'd put money on Leary for Livings. For a full breakdown of the line situation, read Tom Ryle's piece from earlier today.

One caveat here, the organization could look to the outside for help and that could shake-up the race for the starting spot. Brian Waters' name keeps popping up in conjunction with the Cowboys, this surgery could serve to magnify that interest.
