The Dallas Cowboys hosted a familiar face at team headquarters Tuesday.
North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz spent Tuesday re-connecting with some old friends in North Texas. The Dallas Cowboys coaching staff worked closely with Wentz back in January at the Senior Bowl, and now he has made an official pre-draft visit to Big D. Dallas also sent a member of the scouting department to Wentz' pro day last week, so the team is certainly showing a fair amount of interest in the young signal-caller.The Cowboys are making sure to kick the tires on all the top prospects, and now they're taking the time to a third look at Wentz.
Back when head coach Jason Garrett and company had Wentz in Mobile, Alabama, he was the hottest commodity in the country. He was like a shiny new toy that most of us were just discovering. As is the norm during NFL draft season, teams and the media have jumped form one hot prospect to the next this spring. Now that the draft is only three short weeks away, front offices are getting serious about their draft boards. So what, if anything, can be made of all the attention the Cowboys are paying to Wentz.
The Cowboys hold the number four pick in this April's draft and could use upgrades in several spots. Despite the fact that owner Jerry Jones has said that Dallas doesn't need to take a quarterback at number four, if the team feels they have a chance to solidify the position for the foreseeable future it may be difficult to pass. It seems that Wentz is the player that the Cowboys like the most among quarterback prospects, but there is a decent chance that the Cleveland Browns are also strongly considering Wentz with the second-overall pick.
Dallas has done everything since Jones made his proclamation about not drafting a quarterback to make it look like that it is still a possibility they will draft a quarterback at four. They are bringing in Wentz and Jared Goff for a look and are even taking a peek at Paxton Lynch (they are monitoring other QBs later in the draft). Dallas may have genuine interest in Wentz (or Goff) at pick number four, but could they be setting up the conditions for QB-hungry teams to trade up? The Cowboys overall strategy may be to trade down and get more picks, but for that to happen they need a partner. One way to get that partner is to create the illusion that you might draft a quarterback, because that is the one position most likely to entice a team to trade up and overpay. You are basically seeing if another team will get desperate for a signal-caller and try to wrest the fourth pick away so they can grab a quarterback instead.
Even if a team doesn't trade with Dallas, they may jump up to the Chargers spot afraid that the Cowboys could draft their guy at QB. If that happens, Dallas could end up with a player like Jalen Ramsey.
What say you BTB? Is Dallas genuinely interested in drafting Wentz (or Goff)? Or are they leaning more towards generating a trade market for them?
