All of the hype regarding the Dallas Cowboys' first-round pick has been about Myles Jack, Jalen Ramsey, Joey Bosa, and Carson Wentz. However, these five players could make sense as well.
The Dallas Cowboys could go a variety of ways with their first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. With holes across their roster, mainly at the quarterback, running back, defensive end, linebacker, and cornerback positions, the Cowboys are in terrific position to bring in a player that can be a playmaker here for years to come.
Because the Cowboys have so many holes and they could potentially pick a player that could help the team in the future like a quarterback or one that could help the team immediately, it's been hard to predict who they will use their first-round pick on. Dallas been mocked to draft either Jalen Ramsey, Carson Wentz, Myles Jack, or Joey Bosa among others. However, there are a few other players that could make sense atop the first round. Let's take a look at five other first-round options.
Noah Spence
In terms of EDGE rushers, Spence may just be the best one in this year's draft class. Because of failed drug tests, Spence was dismissed from the Ohio State football program before signing on to play with Eastern Kentucky. With unbelievable bend around the edge combined with a ton of freakish pass-rushing moves as well as pure get-off, Spence just does an excellent job at getting to the quarterback.
He may not be the best fit for Dallas' 4-3 scheme, as his 6'3, 260-pound frame suits better for a 3-4 scheme, but the Cowboys would be hard-pressed to not find a way to get Spence on the field, whether that be in pass-rushing situations or nickle/dime formations. If Spence blossoms at the NFL Scouting Combine and he impresses the Cowboys' coaching staff in interviews, I wouldn't be surprised if Spence ended up with a star on his helmet.
Jared Goff
The top quarterback prospect in the draft, at least in my eyes is Goff. Wentz is receiving all of the hype because of the rise he has been on and because he was on the Cowboys' Senior Bowl roster. However, if Wentz or even Paxton Lynch is taken by the Cleveland Browns with the second-overall pick, Goff comes in play for the Cowboys.
With top-flight accuracy, terrific ball placement, football intelligence, and a ton of other traits, Goff is the guy that looks to benefit the most by sitting behind Tony Romo and getting some NFL seasoning. Goff is a guy that should intrigue Jason Garrett and Wade Wilson, both of whom are quarterback gurus.
Ezekiel Elliott
The consensus best running back in the draft, Elliott is a guy that could do something Darren McFadden simply cannot and that's run in the Cowboys' zone-blocking scheme. McFadden was extremely productive in 2015, but because his contract is up at the end of the 2016 season and he has a ton of history with injury, the Cowboys will be looking to add a running back at some point in the draft and Elliott seems to make perfect sense.
Drafting a running back in the top five will cause for some questioning, but Elliott is a game-breaking player that has been compared to the likes of Todd Gurley and Devonta Freeman. If the Cowboys feel that Elliott will add another dynamic to their offense, then maybe it is a pick worth investing in.
Jaylon Smith
If it weren't for a gruesome knee injury, Smith just could be top overall player in this draft class. At 6'3, 225 pounds, Smith is a guy that moves extremely well. He shows the ability to play all three linebacker positions and while the injury will scare away teams, if he's impressive in his return and in the basic testing he does, many teams will regain their interest and confidence in the old Notre Dame star.
Depending on what the Cowboys do with Rolando McClain this offseason, the linebacker position could become a position of need as we near the draft. If the Cowboys let McClain walk in free agency and they're not confident in either Anthony Hitchens or Damien Wilson taking on bigger roles, Smith is a guy that could provide some intrigue atop the first round.
Laquon Treadwell
If the Cowboys decide they can wait for a quarterback and they decide that linebacker and cornerback are positions that can be improved later in the draft, wide receiver could become a potential desire for Dallas. Sitting in the franchise state they're in, the Cowboys would benefit tremendously by adding a future stud like Treadwell, who is thought of as the best receiver in this draft class.
Drafting Treadwell with the fourth-overall pick would be a value pick, but it could also be one that could give the Cowboys more talent in the now and in the future. The Atlanta Falcons moved up to draft Julio Jones a few years ago. At the time, it seemed like a value pick, but it seems to be working for them just fine. If Treadwell gets to four, he will definitely be in the Cowboys brass' conversation.
