There will be several potential selections the Cowboys could make when they are on the clock with the fourth overall pick. But the path they take really boils down to one choice, which will set the tone for this franchise for the foreseeable future.
Jalen Ramsey, Jared Goff, Myles Jack, Carson Wentz, Ezekiel Elliott, Joey Bosa, or Laquon Treadwell, several of these players and others will be available when it's the Cowboys turn to make their selection in April's NFL Draft. However, the available players will be secondary to the true decision that will face the team over the next two months. That decision, is the same question being asked and pondered by fans and media alike.
Is now the time to select Tony Romo's successor at quarterback?
The wise Sigmund Bloom (@sigmundbloom) of footballguys.com says that the draft is the one singular time in the off-season that NFL teams will reveal to us their true intentions and beliefs about their teams.
It's very easy for Jason Garrett to stand in front of a microphone and say a player "did some good things" or for Jerry Jones to sit down and talk about four or five more years for Romo. But on that late April weekend, with millions watching, the Cowboys decision makers will make a call to their representatives in Chicago, who will turn in a card, and Roger Goodell will announce their beliefs about the organization for all the world to hear, and in that moment, they cannot lie.
When they make their pick, they will tell their fans everywhere whether they are in a mode of continuing to build around Tony Romo to try to make a Super Bowl run, or if they are looking to build a team that can be successful for the next decade. If they are all-in on a Super Bowl with Romo, they likely make a pick like Ramsey, Jack, or Elliott, but if they look two or three years into the future and see the quarterback wilderness that awaits, they could make the choice to choose Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, or Paxton Lynch.
The choices they make that day, and in the weeks leading up to it, will set the direction of the organization known as "America's Team" now and in the future.
