A quick look at the news from the last practice before Dallas’s first game.
The Dallas Cowboys held their final practice of the week today and began preparations for the Los Angeles Rams game on Saturday. As usual, it featured a lot of what we’ve come to expect, with a little new shaken in for spice.
Much ado was made of the new Tony Romo Direct TV Commercial...
Ezekiel Elliott remained off to the side, though it sounded like he was doing everything he could to get on to something new. Maliek Collins continued to join him on the resistance bands. Cedric Thornton and Tyrone Crawford were notably back, while Sean Lee and Charles Tapper took the day off. Lee’s situation was unspecified while Tapper was nursing a sore back. In other minor news, Dan Bailey missed his second field goal of camp, this one apparently hitting both uprights before bouncing back out.
David Irving earned first team reps at left defensive end and continued to show strong while Ryan Russell had another would-be sack. Tyrone Crawford met Alfred Morris behind the line of scrimmage and stripped the football, while Jack "the other" Crawford batted a pass and nearly intercepted it. Cedric Thornton also batted a pass and linebacker Derek Akunne made his presence felt with a forced fumble. The defense and, in particular, the line, continued to show strong and don’t seem to have at all removed the chip on their shoulder about the offseason talk.
But it wasn’t all defense. Darius Jackson took the majority of the snaps today and continues to look like someone who can advance the football in the NFL. Geoff Swaim also continues to make a play for advancement up the depth chart, catching several passes including a TD during the 11-on-11 period. Tony Romo looked in mid-season form as far as taking the play clock down goes. It’s unlikely he’ll play much on Saturday. But the big play of the day was more Dez Bryant doing more Dez things:

Some actions are indefensible.
After the light work, the Cowboys are having an even lighter afternoon walkthough and then tomorrow off as they prepare for Saturday’s game against the Rams. Two days till we can see these guys in action against someone else. Who steps up? Who stands out?
Soon, we’ll know.
