A scouting report on the Cowboys seventh-round selection, defensive lineman Jordan Carrell from Colorado.

The seventh round is a great time to secure those picks that you’d otherwise have to fight for when the undrafted free agent market opens up. Dallas took action last year by pulling the trigger on Rico Gathers. This year they went after a defensive lineman from Colorado, Jordan Carrell. The defensive lineman will join his Colorado teammate, Chidobe Awuzie, who the Cowboys drafted yesterday in the second round.

Quietly, Carrell had 5.5 sacks, 51 tackles and 12 QB hurries. He was very reliable as he led all defensive players with 625 snaps.

Carrell has been the group’s workhorse. His 393 snaps are, by far, the most of any CU lineman. Carrell said there was a major adjustment last season, going from sea level to the hands-on-your-shorts elevation of Boulder, but he attacked the challenge and ended up playing 83 percent of CU’s defense snaps.

Carrell won’t be asked to log many snaps in Dallas and he’ll fight for a chance to play along a defensive end rotation consisting of Demarcus Lawrence, Benson Mayowa, David Irving, Demontre Moore, and now Taco Charlton or a defensive tackle rotation of Maliek Collins, Tyrone Crawford, Cedric Thornton, Stephen Paea, and fellow rookie, Joey Ivie.

The defensive line is stacked with bodies and getting in on the rotation is going to be quite the challenge.

Here is the draft analysis from Tony Pauline of Rotoworld:

"During drills Carrell looked smooth, quick and very fluid," Pauline writes. The analyst doesn't see the 6-foot-2, 293-pounder landing in the draft proper, but believes an NFL team will sign him as a street free agent when all is said and done. During testing work on Wednesday, Carrell put in a 40-yard dash in the mid-4.8's and notched a 31.5-inch vertical jump. This past season, he logged 46 tackles (6.0 for loss) and five sacks in 13 games played.

Here are his pro day numbers:

Unheralded Jordan Carrell caused a bit of a buzz with a fine performance.

The defensive tackle measured 6’ 2” and 293 pounds, timed in the mid-4.8’s in the 40 and touched 31.5 inches in the vertical jump. He completed 23 reps on the bench but had two taken away.

During drills Carrell looked smooth, quick and very fluid. He will be signed after the draft.

Dallas jumped on this pick to secure his services so they wouldn’t have to compete for him in the undrafted free agent market.

The Cowboys went into this draft with a lot of question marks on defense. The leave it with a great opportunity to answer those questions.
