As we move towards free agency, which begins on March 9, we’ll take a look at the Cowboys current unrestricted free agents in an effort to discern whether they will return or not. Today, we’ll take on a player who has had an inconsistent stay in Dallas, WR Brice Butler.

History


Butler was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round of the 2013 draft. He had started his college career at USC, but finished it with one year at San Diego State. The Cowboys traded for Butler in 2015 after Dez Bryant was injured early in the season. His most famous Cowboys moment may be the penalty called on him for supposedly entering and leaving the huddle in the Green Bay playoff game this past season.

Case For Re-Signing


Butler, physically, is the prototype receiver for the Cowboys. He is listed at 6' 3" and 215 pounds, so as far as receivers go he is a big body. He also has athleticism to go with that. At his Pro Day he ran a 4.37 40 and showed well in the other events. Everything about him physically screams good NFL receiver, perfect for the Cowboys scheme.

There are times when Butler makes plays and looks like he could be a very good receiver. His potential is what keeps you coming back. There is a feeling that once the light goes on for him, he'll be a playmaker.

Case For Letting Him Go


Waiting on Butler to turn on the light has been going on for a while now. Despite all his physical gifts, he's never been able to put it together for any length of consistent play and he's been in the league for four years now. One moment he's making a very nice catch, the next he's dropping a pass that is right in his hands. His natural instincts for the game don't seem to match his physical gifts. At some point, you have to give up on potential if it never turns into production.

Summary


Butler looks the part, but never has produced consistently. The Cowboys could lose Terrance Williams, so Butler could be a backup plan since he knows the Cowboys system, but there is a feeling Dallas could do better.
