Scouting report on Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims.
Wide receiver could be a sneaky need for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason. Amari Cooper, Randall Cobb, and Tavon Austin are all free agents, leaving Dallas with a major hole at the position. Now there is little chance the Cowboys let Cooper walk, so he should be in the fold next season, but Cobb is a different story. After bringing in his former head coach, Mike McCarthy, the odds of retaining Cobb seem to have increased; he could return on a relatively team-friendly deal giving Dallas a solid group of three wide outs.
If Cobb elects to go elsewhere, wide receiver becomes an immediate need for the Cowboys. But If Cobb does return, it allows the Cowboys to focus on defense with their first few draft picks and then possibly target a receiver later. In that case, an intriguing prospect for Dallas to look into is Denzel Mims out of Baylor.

Strengths: The biggest thing that Mims has going for him is his huge catch radius created by his length. He is a great athlete, and his 6’3 frame allows him to go up and get jump balls in the air. Mims has a background as a track and field athlete, and it shows in his running ability. His long legs allow him to have track-like strides. At the combine he will likely run a solid 40 time, elevating his draft stock even more. He is solid in his release off the line, and his short burst of speed allowed him to get open in college versus man coverage. If you go back and watch some of his college tape, you see some extremely impressive catches. His hands are more of a strength than a weakness. At times he will get ahead of himself and you will see an easy drop, but his ability to go up and make some extremely impressive catches make his hands a strength. Pretty impressive as a route runner. Has outstanding ball skills. Looks like a great rebounder in basketball going up to get a rebound. Uses his big frame and long arms to his advantage to block out defenders and go up and get the football.
Weaknesses: As we see with many Big 12 wide receivers, needs to improve his overall route-running. This will come with time, as it does with many wideouts, but if he wants to become a starting X or Z, his routes will have to become more fluid. Sometimes gets ahead of himself looking for RAC and drops easy passes. Strength could be improved, a year in an NFL weight program will do him wonders. Getting stronger will allow him to make some contested catches while absorbing contact that he did not in college which will make him more dominant with his natural ball skills.
Overall Summary: Denzel Mims is a guy who has the ability to step in day 1 and contribute in a role for an NFL team. He has such good ball skills and athletic ability that he will be able to make plays immediately in the league. His route running is something that will be improved as he learns how to become an NFL wide receiver. He will need to cut down on the easy drops, but Mims is one of the prospects with the biggest upward trajectory in this draft class. For the Cowboys, if Randall Cobb returns, as mentioned before, Mims would be a very solid addition to their wide receiver group. With Cooper, Gallup, and Cobb in the fold, Mims would not be expected to fill a large role his rookie year, but could get on the field enough to produce. He would be a great red zone target, where Dallas has struggled mildly the past two seasons. An ideal team for Mims would be one with a clear number one and two receiver, giving him the ability to see the field just enough to develop, but not so much that he is exposed. The Cowboys fit that description perfectly, but it will be tricky for Mims to end up in Dallas. The Cowboys have so many needs on the defensive side of the ball, it will be very hard to use pick 17 or 51 on an offensive player. I find it hard to believe that with the way Mims’ stock is rising that he will fall to their pick at 82, making the odds not great he ends up in Dallas. If he is still on the board in the third, it would be an outstanding pick, but I have a feeling Mims will go somewhere in the third round before Dallas is on the clock.
