Here are five candidates that could fall to the Cowboys' 101st overall pick.
We continue the "Candidates Who May Slide" series today with NFL Draft hopefuls who could see their stocks fall towards the end of Day 2. In recent years, the Dallas Cowboys have successfully added improvements at positions of need in the first and second rounds. However, they've struggled with finding that talent in the middle rounds. For the Cowboys to make the most out of their high draft picks this year, they will need to be better in this department.
Sitting where they are in the first two rounds, the Cowboys are going to get the chance to add two players who can be mainstays on this roster for years to come. The headline to watch for in this year's draft for Dallas is seeing which players they can nab towards the end of Day 2 and how they can develop them into starters. The following five names are all players who could go in the third round, but a variety of reasons may mean that their stocks will fall just a little bit.
Leonte Carroo, Wide Receiver, Rutgers
The dropped assault charges will clearly have teams think twice of adding a player like Carroo on their roster, but one team that could look past that is the Cowboys. Carroo was on the Cowboys' North squad at the Senior Bowl and one area where he continues to prove himself is his leadership qualities. Carroo has the makings of a solid possession receiver at the next level. If he slides to the fourth round, getting a guy like him to push Terrance Williams' abilities makes sense.
Cyrus Jones, Cornerback, Alabama
Unfortunately, Jones' size will likely restrict him from ever playing outside, but he shows the poise, toughness, and ball skills that are needed to be a competitive inside cornerback at the next level. Jones was one of the unsung heroes on Alabama's defense and if added to a roster where he can learn from one of the best slot corners in football in Orlando Scandrick, the Cowboys could potentially have two really nice inside cornerbacks to take away opposing slot receivers and tight ends.
Joshua Perry, Linebacker, Ohio State
Despite being relatively comfortable at the linebacker position, one could bank a lot of money on the Cowboys drafting a linebacker, considering they've drafted a player at the position in every draft since the 2004 NFL Draft. Perry is a thumping style linebacker who can play as either a Sam or Mike linebacker. He's the "Right Kinda Guy" Jason Garrett looks for, but he's also extremely stiff and basically inept at covering opposing weapons. However, if the Cowboys see enough potential to be molded in Perry, there's chance he's available in the fourth.
Jalen Mills, Safety, LSU
Mills is perhaps one of the most intelligent safeties in the nation over the past couple of seasons but he has flown a bit under the radar in the pre-draft process. Sure it's up in the air what his position will be in the NFL and he may not be the most intimidating presence, but he's an intelligent leader who can captain the back-end of a secondary. Dallas will likely choose a safety sometime in this draft and if they hold off on drafting one early, Mills would definitely be a good consolation prize.
Cardale Jones, Quarterback, Ohio State
Cardale's latest comments could come back to haunt him. I look at this quarterback class and I see a ton of enticing signal-callers. The love for Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, and Paxton Lynch should come as no surprise, but I think the ceiling for Jones is immense to say the least. Besides Lynch, I don't really think anyone in this class has better arm talent in this class than Jones. If the Cowboys believe they can develop Jones into what I believe he can become, he has all the makings to be the heir apparent to Tony Romo. He just needs to make sure he keeps his head on straight first.
