There is more to an NFL Draft than just the first round. Here are some players to consider when the Cowboys go on the clock in round number two.
We all know that the Dallas Cowboys hold the fourth-overall pick in this year's NFL draft, and we have all talked ad nauseum about who we believe that pick should be, (ahem...Jalen Ramsey). But drafts are not made by first round picks alone, and even though the league is entranced by free agent fever we must still continue our draft preparation. So who will the Cowboys take with the 34th overall? Let's take a look at four guys that Dallas should consider.
Corey Coleman - WR, Baylor
Many Cowboys fans will be familiar with Coleman. He is a local high school product who went to Waco to play for coach Art Briles and the Baylor Bears. Coleman is undersized for an outside receiver at 5'11", but his production over the last two seasons is man-sized. Over his sophomore and junior campaigns, he collected 138 receptions for 2,482 yards and 31 touchdowns. Their have been many questions about Baylor pass catchers and their ability to run routes and Coleman is no exception. Coach Briles does not ask his receivers to learn a complicated route tree, and when paired with his less than ideal size that may be enough to keep the Cowboys from seriously considering him in the second round.
William Jackson III - CB, Houston
Jackson is one of the hot names coming out of the combine and may quickly climb out of range for the Cowboys at this spot. I've seen some mocks that have him going as high as the middle of the first round. Also, if Dallas is able to draft Ramsey with their first pick it may cause them to pass on Jackson. If they haven't already selected a defensive back however, the front office should strongly consider selecting the former Cougar at 34. Jackson is six feet tall with big hands and is coming off a senior season that saw him collect five interceptions and 23 pass breakups. The Cowboys need both a production upgrade and an influx of quality depth in the back end of their defense and Jackson would certainly help them achieve that goal. If available, I the Cowboys would be wise to make Jackson their second rounder.
Derrick Henry - RB, Alabama
If you don't already know who Henry is, you need to crawl out from under that rock. Henry is the Heisman Trophy winning workhouse tailback for the National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide. He is a massive running back. At 6'3" and weighing 247 lbs, Henry is the size of an NFL linebacker. He also fits the profile of what the Cowboys want in a runner fairly well. He is a one-cut, downhill runner who is difficult to tackle one he gets motoring. However, he doesn't have ideal speed, and requires time and space to find his top gear. As with many of this year's backs, Henry would likely have his best success with Dallas. I'm personally not a huge fan of Henry and would be fine with Will McClay and company deciding to pass on him.
Bronson Kaufusi - DE, BYU
This is not a name that you may have heard much here at BTB, but Kaufusi is a real possibility for Dallas in the second Round. He is a coaches kid who went on a two year Mormon mission to New Zealand before beginning his college career at BYU in 2012. Kaufusi is 6'6" tall and weighs in at 285 pounds. He cuts an impressive figure and just looks like an NFL defensive end. After moving back and forth from defensive line to linebacker, Kaufusi settled at end for his senior season and collected 11 sacks and 64 total tackles. Like most young defensive ends, he will take some time to adjust to the pro game, but Kaufusi could be a very nice fit for the Cowboys with a bunch of upside.
There you have it, four solid candidates for the number 34 overall pick. If the team is picking today, I think it ends up being Jackson. By the time April 28th rolls around though it could be the dark horse Kaufusi. Of course more names will pop up and you never know which players may tumble out of the first round. Whatever the case the Cowboys need to be taking this pick just as seriously as they take the first rounder.
