News: BTB: Cowboys Draft 2020: Our latest mock draft includes a trade down in round one

A trade down mock before tomorrow’s virtual draft. Let’s get it!

The NFL Draft is tomorrow!

After all the rumors, virtual meetings and mock drafts over the last month, we are one day away from the NFL Draft. The Dallas Cowboys have kept a pretty tight lid on who they are looking at even though the insiders are trying to read the tea leaves. Quite impressive considering how many times we have been able to predict their pick days before the draft.

With only virtual meetings and rumors circulating, the predictions for the Cowboys have been all over the place. Knowing all of that we’re still going to give it a shot; with my general manager hat in place we predict the Dallas Cowboys draft.

This mock was done using the PFF Mock Draft Simulator, time to get to work!

With the 23rd pick in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE - LSU

After watching their main target in CJ Henderson go earlier than expected, the Cowboys are able to take advantage of the value from the falling Oregon quarterback, Justin Herbert. Needing a new quarterback, the New England Patriots make the call and the Cowboys trade back to the 23rd pick and load up on picks receiving the Patriots 87th and 98th picks. The Patriots are forced to slightly overpay, but that’s the price of a QB. After all of that, the Cowboys are still able to get their secondary option in the talented young EDGE, K’Lavon Chaisson, to pair opposite DeMarcus Lawrence.

With the 51st pick in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Damon Arnette, Cornerback - Ohio St.

The Cowboys second pick circles back to their biggest need on the team, cornerback. Once again they miss out on drafting the cornerback they want, Trevon Diggs, and instead take the talented and overlooked cornerback from Ohio St., Damon Arnette. The physical cornerback is a terror in press man coverage and plays his best football in man-to-man coverage. His ability to stick with receivers and get his hands on the football will help ease the Cowboys anxiety about losing Byron Jones in the offseason.

With the 82nd pick in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Lloyd Cushenberry III, Center - LSU

In a value move the Cowboys decide to use their pick on center Lloyd Cushenberry III to come in and replace the retired Travis Frederick. He’s a strong player that can be a bulldozer in the running game, but also has the ability to pass protect and help with combination blocking. Cushenberry III is known for his leadership on the LSU offensive line and brings that reputation with him to an offensive line in need of a new field general. He won’t be given the starting position, but he has the best chance to immediately help this offensive line protect quarterback Dak Prescott.

With the 87th pick in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Devin Duvernay, Wide Receiver - Texas

The Dallas Cowboys are back on the board thanks to the first round trade with the Patriots and use that first draft pick to select Devin Duvernay to replace Randall Cobb in the slot. This physical receiver has the size to push around smaller slot corners, and the quickness to run past the larger/slower slot cornerbacks and linebackers trying to cover him. The other good thing about Duvernay has to be his hands, he catches everything thrown his way and once the ball is in his hands his size gives him the ability to break tackles and get those tough extra yards.

With the 98th pick in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Rashard Lawrence, Defensive Tackle - LSU

With the second pick received from the Patriots, the team dips into the defensive line pool and selects another LSU Tiger, Rashard Lawrence. With the selection of Lawrence, the Cowboys now have a nice first and second line rotation with Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe starting and Trysten Hill and Lawrence coming into to back them up. For the first time in a long time, the Cowboys can say that they are now set along the interior of their defensive line and not just with fillers but really talented players.

With the 123rd pick in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Devin Asiasi, Tight End - UCLA

The loss of Jason Witten leaves the Cowboys light on bodies and talent at the tight end position after Blake Jarwin, but after a run on tight ends that Cowboys are able to land the versatile Devin Asiasi. Asiasi has been linked to the Cowboys recently and for good reason, he is a big strong tight end that can block inline but has the legs to split out wide and challenge safeties down the field. Adding Asiasi gives the Cowboys a nice one-two punch when paired with Jarwin.

With the 164th pick in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Kenny Robinson Jr., Safety - West Virginia/XFL

The Cowboys finally go out and draft their safety, and he comes not from college but from the recently bankrupt XFL. Before being kicked off the West Virginia Mountaineers for academic misconduct, Robinson was a highly-touted player with a future in the NFL. With a nose for the football he was known for his play-making skills as he was able to intercept seven passes in college. But instead of transferring to another school he joined the XFL and continued to show off his talents with the St. Louis BattleHawks by intercepting two passes in the shortened season. The Cowboys may have landed their new ball-hawking safety in Robinson.

With the 179th pick in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Shyheim Carter, Corner/Safety - Alabama

The Cowboys decide to double dip taking another safety in Shyheim Carter. The corner turned safety gives the team a player that can come in and play both positions in a pinch while also giving them someone who can help on special teams. Carter, with time, could develop into ta quality backup safety in the NFL.

With the 231st pick in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Braden Mann, Punter - Texas A&M

The Cowboys lost the field position battle last season, and while a lot of that falls on the offense’s inability to move the ball, the rest belongs to punter Chris Jones. So with their final pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Cowboys select punter Braden Mann to come in and take over. Jones, who has recently come out and said he was playing hurt last season, may know that the writing is on the wall and maybe the Cowboys new special teams staff is thinking same thing.
