Cowboys go back-to-back and shore up their cornerback position for the foreseeable future.
The second round went as well as it could for the Cowboys as they got themselves a corner that was a first-round talent on a lot of boards. Chidobe Awuzie is the exact type of player the Dallas Cowboys are looking to add to their defense. Now, the third round came along and the Dallas Cowboys remained calm and collected. They told you they would get their guys when they wanted them. That's exactly what they did again here at 92, showing that patience is most certainly a virtue.
The Dallas Cowboys select Jourdan Lewis, CB, Michigan
Where He Fits: The Cowboys basically turned their empty cornerback stable into a crowded room. Lewis is another very aggressive corner with comparisons to Adam "Pacman" Jones. He loves the football and it's like his birthright to take it away from you. He's a willing tackler but also a very sound tackler. This is a guy that can play in the slot and is willing to throw his body around.
Production: He was a Jim Thorpe Award finalist this season, All-American selection, and Big-Ten Defensive Back of the Year. He played in 10 games where he recorded 25 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 2 INTs, and 20 PBUs. In three years as a starter, Lewis had 42 passes defensed, six interceptions, and only allowed two touchdowns.
Value: Another very versatile athlete that offers some help on special teams (25.5 yards avg. per return). Dane Brugler had him ranked 45th overall and he was the 8th-best cornerback. He excels in run defense as well but his strength is man-to-man. He's got good speed and can recover from mistakes quickly. Cowboys met with him at the Senior Bowl where he performed very well. If not for his meet-the-threshold size and off-the-field concern, he could have been a late-first-early-second-round player.
Conclusion: He's got some limitations in size but again the Cowboys are looking for defensive backs that make plays and they shored up their cornerback position. They really liked Lewis dating back to early in this process but he has a domestic violence case hanging over his head. The Cowboys must be in the know on this player and he'll need to prove that he's not a knucklehead.
That said, his eyes are amazing and his awareness to make quarterbacks pay for their mistakes is extremely useful. He's a sticky corner who maintains his position and can track the ball with the best of this class. Lewis is bringing a fierce and physical nature, plays a lot bigger than he is and is one amazing technician. He's too smart to be out of position.
