With pick #146 (overall), 6th pick in the fifth round, the Cowboys select Devin Street.

With pick #146 (overall), 6th pick in the fifth round, the Cowboys select wide receiver Devin Street of Pittsburgh. The Cowboys got Street after a trade with the Detroit Lions where they sent their 158th pick and 229th pick to move up. Street is 6' 3" and 198 lbs. so he has good height, but he probably needs to add a little muscle. His thin frame means he gets pushed around some by cornerbacks. He has long arms and is said to have soft hands. Hands are very reliable and he snatches the ball out of the air. Is very adept at using his body to shield defenders. He was a solid citizen on the Pittsburgh team, falling into the "RKG" mold and could be looked at as a #3 WR on the outside.

Durability is a little bit of a concern and he lacks top-end speed. Not a real threat with the ball in his hands after the catch.

Blessed with great height, long arms and natural hands, Street's ability to be a clutch receiver in the redzone is unquestioned. Able to shield defenders while getting up to pluck high passes enables him to consistently win jump ball battles. His body control, coordination and concentration allow him to adjust to make tough catches on off-target passes with surprising ease. Being tall and having good hands is great, but that does not guarantee success in the NFL.

Street's thin frame allows physical cornerbacks to jolt him with a punch to slow his release and are able to get him off his stem with physical play. He will need to add weight and improve his playing strength in order to deal with the physical coverage of NFL cornerbacks.

He does not however have good initial quickness off the ball, which limits his ability to get behind cornerback off the line. Lack of foot quickness and long legs also make it tough for him to change directions fast enough to avoid jam on line and contact during route.

Cowboys team needs


Defensive Tackle: With Jason Hatcher gone and Nick Hayden just a serviceable player, the Cowboys interior is weak. Henry Melton has been signed but is coming off an ACL injury. A couple of guys on the roster could help, but Dallas needs a stud.

Defensive End: Long time pass rusher DeMarcus Ware is no longer a Cowboy. That immediately leaves a huge hole. Anthony Spencer is trying to recover from injury. The rest are unproven. Help is needed. [UPDATE] The addition of Demarcus Lawrence makes defensive end help less of a priority.

Safety: Barry Church can play, everyone else is questionable. J.J. Wilcox, Jeff Heath, Matt Johnson? None of them are a lock.

Guard/Tackle: Mackenzy Bernadeau is a stop-gap. Ron Leary showed some promise, but needs to improve and has a chronic knee injury. Doug Free could regress at any moment. [UPDATE] With the selection of Zack Martin, the Cowboys need for offensive line help is greatly reduced.

Wide Receiver: Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams form a good duo, but behind them is slot receiver Cole Beasley. The Cowboys could use another guy.
