News: BTB: Cowboys Draft Picks 2015: Dallas Selects Chaz Green In Third Round (Pick #91)

The Cowboys selection in the third round of the NFL draft has been made.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Chaz Green, an offensive tackle from Florida with pick number 91 in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft.

The Cowboys decide to add some depth along the offensive line and possibly look to the future past Doug Free at right tackle. The Cowboys passed on running backs and linebackers, and on some other tackles that many scouts had rated higher. In fact, almost no one has Green rated as high as the third round. Interesting pick, one the Cowboys front office will be grilled on.

His basic description - position versatility; a good fit as a backup in a ZBS scheme - is precisely what the Cowboys need from any offensive lineman they draft this year. As several of the scouts above attest, Green is probably better than his career or reports indicate, and he's a smart, mature, professional in his approach.

STRENGTHS: Wide base in his kickslide with natural movement skills for the position...displays the footwork to set up shop in space, getting to the second level quickly and utilizing proper body position...excellent spatial awareness with a strong understanding of what's going on around him...quick eyes to recognize blitzes, picking up "B gap" pressures and linebackers on combos, anticipating where rushers are coming from - not fooled by much.
Patient and disciplined in his stance, not jumping offsides when rushers do...large, strong hands to meet defenders with a jolt...versatile experience, starting at both left and right tackle over his career...voted a senior captain...tough-minded and has battled back from multiple injuries, working hard off the field to develop the mental part of the game - highly thought of by the coaching staff.

WEAKNESSES: Doesn't play with overwhelming strength in the run game, lacking mauling qualities...room to add bulk and needs to improve his functional power to control blocks once engaged...bad habits as a run blocker, dropping his head and losing sight of his target...tends to stop his feet at the point of attack and needs to improve his grip timing to avoid holding calls...adequate length for the position, but doesn't consistently use his reach effectively.

Struggles to re-anchor, allowing his base to narrow against secondary moves...not a passive player, but doesn't play mean either...strong durability concerns, missing extended playing time over his career - multiple ankle injuries, including a sprain (Oct. 2011) that forced him to miss four games as a redshirt freshman and another sprain (Nov. 2014) as a senior; missed all of 2013 due to a torn labrum that required surgery (Aug. 2013).

Cowboys team needs in the draft:


CB - The situation with Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne makes this a priority.
RB - DeMarco Murray's departure opens up a spot for a rookie to compete with Darren McFadden and others.
DL - The Cowboys could certainly use help along the defensive line. A pass-rusher and an active one-tech are possibilities.
LB - The Cowboys have Rolando McClain and Sean Lee, but injuries for Lee and injuries and off-the-field issues for McClain make things thin.
WR - Dallas could use a speedy wide reciever, especially one who can return kicks.
T/G - Depth along the line, especially at swing tackle.
