A surprise pick.
The Dallas Cowboys selected Geoff Swaim, a tight end from Texas with pick 246 in the seventh round.
Dallas traded their sixth-round pick in 2016 to the San Francisco 49ers. Swaim is a blocking tight end, pure and simple.
Burnt Orange Nation:
An increased role in the passing game never happened for Texas Longhorns tight end Geoff Swaim in 2014, as he caught only 10 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown, but he continued his excellent efforts as a blocker.
The junior college transfer from Butte CC in California was a blue-collar worker in the run game over his two seasons in Austin, consistently putting his hat on defenders when working as an in-line tight end or as a move blocker from the H-back or fullback position. Swaim displayed good mobility, functional strength, and hand placement in all of those roles.
Round 1, Pick 27 (27) -- Byron Jones CB
Round 2, Pick 28 (60) -- Randy Gregory DE
Round 3, Pick 27 (91) -- Chaz Greeen OT
Round 4, Pick 28 (127) -- Damien Wilson LB
Round 5, Pick 27 (163) -- Ryan Russell DE
Round 7, Pick 19 (236) (from Chargers) -- Mark Nzeocha LB
Round 7, Pick 26 (243) (from Ravens) -- Laurence Gibson OT
Round 7, Pick 29 (246) (from 49ers) -- Geoff Swaim TE
Cowboys team needs in the draft:
RB - DeMarco Murray's departure opens up a spot for a rookie to compete with Darren McFadden and others.
WR - Dallas could use a speedy wide receiver, especially one who can return kicks.
