by Archie Barberio on Mar 19, 2012 5:30 PM CDT in Dallas Cowboys 2012 Draft

Stanford offensive guard David DeCastro is one of the popular picks for the Dallas Cowboys in mock drafts across the nation. The Cowboys fan base absolutely loves the idea of drafting DeCastro. He is one of the safest picks in this year's draft class and one of the few blue chip prospects available. If he is available when the Cowboys go on the clock with the 14th overall pick, it would be a home run selection.

There is a possibility that he could be gone before the Cowboys pick. Guards typically don't go in the top fifteen anymore. Mike Iupati was the last guard to go high in the first round and the Cowboys were in love with him, willing to trade up for his services.

If DeCastro is gone before the 14th pick, it wouldn't be the end of the world. The sky won't come crashing down to the ground and it won't be all doom and gloom. Like wide receiver and cornerback, the guard position appears to be a pretty deep class. The talent at the guard position will be there in the later rounds. This is why we shouldn't break our remote if DeCastro is snatched up before the Cowboys have a chance to draft him.

Zeitler or Brandon Brooks would be nice gets as well.

The title should read "there are players other than Decastro."

If you didn't know any better, just by reading this board, you'd think Decastro was the only good player in this entire draft class

Yes, I like both of these guys, too. I'd be happy with Zeitler in the 2nd. I had been hoping for Brooks in the 3rd but it looks like that possibility may be out the window. We do know the Cowboys have a long history of going to small school players in the draft and this is an intriguing possibility. The other thing I like about Brooks is his play really improved this year (likely late bloomer) and he was apparently the best looking OL at the All-Star game he was invited to (? Shrine game) - this proves he can play with the better players.

I think Brooks will be the target in the 2nd. He is rising fast so we may have to take him at 45.

DeCastro is on Carolina's radar, so I don't expect him to last to 14.

Cox in the 1st
Brooks in the 2nd

need to build both lines

well maybe you need to read more

And the reasons DeCastro is so popular:

1) Blue Chip prospect in a position of Need.

2) have yet to read any respected source that has found any serious warts on him

3) We have a very good chance of getting him

4) most people understand the need to strengthen the interior of the O line

Seems like the NFL GMs think this is a pretty deep draft class for OGs.

It's deeper than it has been," Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said about the guard position. "Over the past few years tackles have been bigger. This year, there happens to be more guards. Every year is a little bit different."

The Steelers could always use help on the offensive line, especially after the way injuries ravaged the unit in 2011. And they probably need more help at guard than any other position, particularly on the left side where former starter Chris Kemoeatu was benched because of poor performance and too many mental mistakes.

But Colbert does not sound like a GM who is wrapped up in the notion he must address the offensive line with the No. 1 pick in the April draft. Because there is a lot of value in the second and third round of the draft, it is more likely the Steelers won't begin to address any of the line positions until then.

"I don't necessarily agree with that," Colbert said, when asked if the Steelers need to go after an offensive lineman early in the draft. "Look, you're not going to have five first-rounders. We're very fortunate for having one first-rounder (Pouncey). Max (Starks) was a third-rounder, Marcus Gilbert is a second-rounder, Willie Colon's a fourth-rounder.

"Sure you fill in with free agents and they develop. Ramon Foster did a great job, Doug Legursky; they've developed into NFL starters in some form or fashion. No team has five Pro Bowlers. No team has five first-rounders on the offensive line that I know of. It's always going to be a collection of different players."

2011 guards went in the 1st, 2 in the 3rd, and 2 in the 4th. 5 total

2010: 1 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd, 4 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th 9 total
2009: 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, 5 total
2008: 1 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, 6 total
2007: 1 in the 1st, 2 in the 3rd, 3 in the 4th, 6 total

If DeCastro and Glenn go in the 1st and Zeitler and Osemelle go in the 2nd, that would be 4 guards in the 1st 2 rounds which would be a high over 5 years. That would leave for the 3rd or maybe even 4th: Brandon Brooks, James Brown, Brandon Washington, Silatolu, Kelemete.

There will be a good or maybe a great guard when we pick in the 3rd round. There will certainly be a great guard when we pick in the 2nd. Those other good players drive down the value of taking DeCastro and Glenn in the 1st unless we are going to draft 2 guards a year after drafting 2 guards and signing at least 1 free agent.

I think I've posted this 50 times over the last week. (I should just put it in my .sig) I don't think Cordy Glenn is in Dallas' plans. He doesn't fit the mold. If they do take him for whatever reason, it will be only as a BPA IMO.

If they don't take DeCastro, I think it will be a defensive front 7 guy. There are several of them in the draft that basically have 1st round grades.

Honestly, with all the guards we have on the roster, if DeCastro is there at #14 along with several OLB/DEs, I thinking we trade down a few spots and take a OLB.

People have been saying this lately, and I agree he doesn't appear to be what we're looking for. But I have to point out that Nate Livings wasn't considered to be in our 'mold' either.

What do you mean? He seems to be in the Phil Costa mold.

Thought I read something that said Livings wasn't good on the move.
