It's not a huge move, but the Cowboys got one of their own free agents under contract today.
As far as free agent moves go, this one ranks pretty far down on the scale. But, the Cowboys did re-sign one of their own today when punter Chris Jones signed his exclusive rights tender.
Dallas Cowboys punter Chris Jones has signed his exclusive rights tender of $645,000. The move chews up $150,000 of the roughly $2 million worth of salary-cap space.
Although last year was his first full season as the Cowboys punter, he's actually been around for a while. Way back in 2011 he played in two games and had four games under his belt in 2012 before he tore his ACL. Last year Jones played in all 16 games and average 45 yards per punt (39 net).
For those of you wondering what an exclusive rights free agent is:
EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FREE AGENT (ERFA): A player whose contract has expired and has three or fewer tenured years in the league. His original team must make a contract offer by the league imposed deadline or the player becomes an unrestricted free agent. No compensation is awarded for losing EFAs.
So, be a clutch kicker like Dan Bailey, get a seven-year, $22 million contract. Be an okay punter like Chris Jones, get $645,000.
