The latest scuttlebutt on Cowboys free agency includes both the expected and the unexpected.
They say that every free agent with any name recognition gets linked to the Dallas Cowboys, so that may be all that is in play. Still, reports on Tuesday came out that the Cowboys have shown interest in DeSean Jackson. From the Washington Post:
Along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots and the Dallas Cowboys also have inquired about wide receiver DeSean Jackson, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, it’s expected that the Commanders and Jackson will part ways, multiple people with knowledge of the situation have indicated.
Jackson of course most recently plied his trade with Washington, and before that he was a thorn in our side playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, who are also reported to be interesting in bringing him back to rectify the move by noted football genius Chip Kelly that led to his departure from Philly. As mentioned, the Cowboys are not exactly playing with a big stack of chips in free agency, so this may be more of a case of due diligence than a real attempt to acquire his services. Any bidding on Jackson would probably end any interest from Dallas rather quickly.
Speaking of bidding wars, Washington was reported earlier as being interested in signing Terrell McClain away from the Cowboys. Now it looks like the San Francisco 49ers may also be in the mix, according to a report from CBS Sports.
The San Francisco 49ers are in the midst of discussions with Dallas Cowboys impending free agent defensive tackle Terrell McClain, per a report from Jane Slater of NFL Media.
Slater tweeted Tuesday afternoon the conversations between the 49ers and McClain are "heating up." McClain, Slater points out, is friends with recently signed 49ers defensive tackle Earl Mitchell and has familiarity with 49ers defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina, who was an assistant defensive line coach in Houston when McClain was with the Texans in 2013.
This is good for McClain, since multiple suitors means a bigger deal in the end. But it is bad for the Cowboys, if they wanted to retain his services. It certainly increases the chances he will be part of the expected exodus out of Dallas. The silver lining is that he may net a nice compensatory pick for the Cowboys in 2018.
