A report on Friday suggested the Dallas Cowboys would be interested in Nick Foles if he were to become available in the coming weeks. How would Foles fit in Dallas?
Nick Foles has enjoyed quite the roller-coaster of a career in the past few years. In 2013, once Foles took over for Michael Vick in the starting role for the Philadelphia Eagles, he enjoyed an MVP-like season. After Chip Kelly came to town, the Eagles realized that Foles wasn't suited for the new spread scheme. Before the 2015 season, the Eagles traded away Foles for Sam Bradford. In just a lone season with the St. Louis Rams, Foles was unsuccessful, posting mediocre numbers and seeing his job taken away from him in the process.
The Rams finished with a 7-9 record in 2015. Under Jeff Fisher, St. Louis has been terrific on the defensive side of the ball, but their lack of playmakers on offense continues to be the reason why they're finishing in the middle of the league each season. The Rams will owe $11 million to Foles over the next two years and because they will likely draft a quarterback or stick with Case Keenum, cutting Foles looks to be the best immediate and long-term option.
If Foles becomes available, one team that could possibly be interested is, of course, the Dallas Cowboys. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the news Friday afternoon:
Speaking of (former) #Eagles QBs: Keep an eye on #Dolphins, #Cowboys, #Commanders, who'll be among teams interested if #Rams deal Nick Foles. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 4, 2016
With how horrible the quarterback play was in Dallas after Tony Romo got injured, it's no secret to find the Cowboys in the quarterback market. The interesting twist here, if we are to lend that report any credence, is that a stop-gap solution like Foles would mean the Cowboys wouldn't have to invest their fourth overall pick on a quarterback.
Jerry Jones said the other day that the Cowboys would not be taking a quarterback with the fourth overall pick. Granted, this could be just a smokescreen designed to prevvent a quarterback-needy team not to trade up in front of the Cowboys. If that is the case, this is quite the weak smokescreen. However, because they reportedly have this interest in Foles, maybe the Cowboys truly believe that their successor to Romo will not come from this draft.
While Foles may never evolve into an every-week starter, it should be said that he only recently turned 27 and he's a better option than the likes of Matt Cassel, Brandon Weeden, or Kellen Moore. The amazing thing is that Foles could still put up some good numbers. Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, Terrance Williams, and, of course, the Cowboys' offensive line are much better options than what Foles dealt with in St. Louis.
If Dallas is serious about making an upgrade to the quarterback position, they might have to shell out some money to beat the other competitors that are interested in Foles. What the Cowboys do in free agency will clearly impact their draft plan. However, signing a quarterback in free agency to play the backup role like Foles or even Robert Griffin III would likely mean that the Cowboys would stay away from drafting a quarterback in the first round.
By signing Foles, the focus would switch their draft focus to the defensive side of the ball. This would likely mean that the team would look at drafting either a cornerback, a linebacker, or a defensive end with their first-round pick. There is also the option of trading back and stock-piling picks. Regardless, if Dallas decides that Foles is the right guy for the backup job, this means that Jalen Ramsey, Myles Jack, and Joey Bosa emerge as the candidates for Dallas' first-round pick.
