The latest news, rumors and angles on the first day of free agency for the Cowboys.

Everybody knows the Dallas Cowboys aren't expected to be major players in free agency. The just don't have the cap space currently to do much. At this point, they are roughly $1.1 million under the cap which represents the smallest number in the league.

They need to get their own house in order before much can happen and much of that rests on the outcome of the DeMarcus Ware situation. Ware, according to sources, wants to know the decision before free agency starts.

DeMarcus Ware has requested the Dallas Cowboys make a decision on his future before the NFL's free-agency signing period begins Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, according to a league source.

Does that mean that he's come to a conclusion and will not accept a pay cut? Or is it a negotiating ploy to get the Cowboys to up whatever number they have given him? All of that is unknown at this point.

The Cowboys could gain leverage by not making a decision any time soon, driving down the amount Ware could get in free agency by letting the big money be spent by the time they make a decision. But this would handcuff them in the meantime leaving very little room to sign any free agents. It could also generate some serious ill will with Ware, and with other players on the team.

The Cowboys are still interested in retaining Jason Hatcher and Anthony Spencer. ESPN Dallas takes a shot at projecting Hatcher's value based on the same numbers we used to project Ware's. They conclude $5.5 - $6 million per year is reasonable.
