The Dallas Cowboys have been sniffing around free agent safeties and bringing safety prospects in for visits before the draft. But it was one of their own that got a contract today, reserve safety and special teams ace Jeff Heath was rewarded with a four-year contract. Heath was a restricted free agent that the Cowboys tendered at the lowest-level, $1.67 million for the upcoming year. That meant that if another team lured him away the Cowboys would have received no compensation. Instead, he's staying in Dallas.
Todd Archer has a Heath quote:
"Obviously I'd be lying if I said there's not a little bit more security when you see more years on the end of your deal, but I'd be hurting myself if I thought I made it because that's not what got me to this point," Heath said. "That's never gotten me anything in my life. I've always had that underdog mentality and I think I need to keep that. That's my nature. I don't think I'll ever lose that, but it does feel good that the coaches and ownership and my teammates, people whose opinions I care about, value me and my hard work and the commitment I've given them since I've been in the league."
Heath came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Saginaw Valley State in 2013. Heath is known as an ace on special teams and the Cowboys are counting on that value. But he's also taken on expanded roles in the regular playing rotation and even ended up with two interceptions last season. Heath fits the role of a great depth guy who can back up Barry Church, J.J. Wilcox, possibly Byron Jones or someone the Cowboys may draft later this month.
