As we head into the summer doldrums, BTB introduces its own form of March Madness to get you through the slow period until training camp: a 64-player "Best Cowboy of all time" tournament! Today’s first round match-up features five seed DeMarcus Ware facing off against twelve seed Charlie Waters
The further we get into the Roger Goodell bracket, the more I think its both the toughest and deepest of the four. Today, we have two more excellent Cowboys, both of whom could easily have been ranked higher: fifth-seeded DeMarcus Ware, the Cowboys career sack leader, and twelfth-seeded Charlie Waters, one half of the bast safety combination in Cowboys history. Bio: Ware was drafted by the Cowboys with the 11th overall pick in the 2005 Draft. He was immediately inserted into the lineup, and made an impact, tying Greg Ellis for the team lead in sacks with eight. The following season, he led the team in sacks with 11.5, the most ever by a Cowboys linebacker, and was elected to the Pro Bowl. This would prove to be the first of six consecutive Pro Bowl nods for Ware (seven in his Cowboys career); he also took home All-Pro laurels on four occasions (1007-'09, '11).
Ware twice led the league in sacks (2008, '10) and, in the five seasons from 2007-'11, ranked in the top three in total sacks four times. In total, he registered 10+ sacks in 7 straight seasons (2006-'12); the only other players to accomplish this - Reggie White and John Randle - are in the Hall of Fame. He is the second fastest player in NFL history to reach 100+ sacks, behind the aforementioned White. As a member of the Cowboys, Ware recorded 28 multiple-sack games and 32 forced fumbles, both team records and, in 2013, became the Cowboys' all-time sack leader, surpassing Harvey Martin's 30-year-old record of 114.

Bio: Waters, a collegiate quarterback and split end, was drafted Cowboys in the third round of the 1970 Draft, and asked to convert to defensive back. As a rookie, he backed up free safety Cliff Harris, and ended up starting six games after Harris left the club for military service. Waters had 5 interceptions that season, and played well enough to earn All-Rookie honors. The next season, Waters was moved to cornerback, where he proceeded to struggle for the next four seasons, going in and out of the starting lineup (he started 33 of a possible 56 games from 1971-'74). In, 1975, Waters was moved to strong safety and his career took off; he started every game for the rest of his career.
As a strong safety he became an All-Pro and, along with Cliff Harris, formed one of the best safety tandems of that era. Fittingly, he gathered 41 interceptions in his career (Waters wore jersey number 41), the third-most in franchise history. In his twelve NFL season, Waters never experienced a losing season and only missed the playoffs once. He played in five Super Bowls, twice helping the Cowboys to Lombardis (in Super Bowls VI and XII). He holds the NFL record for most playoff interceptions with 9. Waters was selected All-Pro twice (1977 and 1978) and to the Pro Bowl three consecutive seasons (1976-1978). He also was team's holder for placekicks.
