In the latest SB Nation mock draft, the Cowboys get defensive, but did they pass on some players they should have drafted.
Earlier today, in our daily news post, we noted that Stephen Jones has basically said that defense is the top priority in the draft and that a player would have to “wow” them on offense to be in the mix, especially early in the draft. So when we turn to the latest SB Nation mock draft, it looks like they are right in line with Jones, giving the Cowboys two defenders in the first two rounds. Just maybe not in the order that has been expected.
The SB Nation mock goes with cornerback first, serving up the Cowboys Gareon Conley from Ohio State.
Cowboys: Pick #28 - CB Gareon Conley

BOTTOM LINE
Press-corner with experience at both cornerback spots and an ability to fit into a variety of coverage techniques. He plays with good top-end speed and has the ball skills to challenge and defend passes on any level. He can step in right away in zone coverage, but could struggle to match patterns from a pedal. He will likely be targeted by teams seeking long cornerbacks who can crowd and trail receivers down the field. He has the talent to become an early starter, but he must improve in run support.
CBS Sports has Conley ranked much lower at #49 overall and the ninth-best cornerback. But, Walter Football has him as the number three corner just behind Marshon Lattimore and Marlon Humphrey. Mike Mayock has Conley as his fourth-overall corner, behind Lattimore, Humphrey and Kevin King.
By picking Conley in this mock draft, they would be passing on players like edge rushers Charles Harris and Tim Williams, safety Jabrill Peppers, tackle Cam Robinson, and a handful of other corners.
In the second round, the mock gives the Cowboys defensive end Tarell Basham from Ohio.
Cowboys: Pick #60 - DE Tarell Basham
We know that the Cowboys have a workout scheduled with Basham and defensive end would certainly be a position of need after going cornerback in the first round. Basham is a player with rising stock, moving up into the second-tier of edge rushers.
Tony Pauline says:
Tarell Basham/DE/Ohio: Basham is another athletic pass rusher with versatility, but the big attraction here is growth potential. Just under 6-foot-4, the belief is Basham can pack on pounds while keeping his speed (4.7s in the 40 at the combine) and lateral quickness (4.35s in the short shuttle). As proven during Senior Bowl week, he can rush the quarterback out of a three-point stance or standing over tackle. Basham has already worked out with the New England Patriots and has a workout with the Dallas Cowboys scheduled.
CBS Sports rates Basham as the #63 player overall and seventh-best defensive end.
How would you rate this draft is the Cowboys walked away with these two players?
