Cowboys fall to Eagles 37-9, season on the brink of collapsing - Tom Ryle, BTB

The Cowboys are now at 5-5, and face a huge hill to try and make the playoffs. It was clear watching the game that the Eagles are just a superior team. They have to be seen as the favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl at this point, and they finally might really have the talent to make it all the way. The thought might disgust us (and winning it all would make the Philadelphia fan base, already arguably the worst in the NFL, completely insufferable), but that is the reality of the situation.
The 2017 season is now in a salvage situation for the Cowboys. It is going to be a very hard thing to do.

It is the Cowboys’ worst loss in the history of AT&T Stadium and the third loss of at least 20 points this season. It is the first time since 2016 against the Buffalo Bills, with Moore as their starter, that the Cowboys did not score an offensive touchdown.
Thoughts of winning the NFC East for the second straight year should be gone. Thoughts of making a wild-card bid should be dimmed as well. Thoughts of simply scoring a touchdown should be the more immediate goal.

WHAT IT MEANS: The competition for the NFC East is over, and the Eagles will be your division champions this season. As for the playoffs, the Cowboys have used up most of their margin for error with their fifth loss. The Cowboys should still feel good about making the playoffs, if they can finish 10-6. If they wind up 9-7, then they’ll have to hope they own some tie-breakers.

But alas, when it rains, it pours. On the Cowboys’ next series, Prescott dropped back to pass on third-and-5 at the Dallas 45-yard line, only to have his elbow hit and the ball fumbled. Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham scooped up the prize and rumbled into the end zone, the blowout official, 37-9.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 5-5 on the season with any thoughts of a repeat division title certainly dashed. They’ll now turn right around and host the Los Angeles Chargers at 3:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

3. Wild card
Well, any hopes of winning the division are over. The only chance the Cowboys have now is earning a wild card spot.
Dallas will likely need at least 10 wins to get one of those two spots. Bad news is most of the teams they are competing with won on Sunday. The next three games are winnable, which is good, but Dallas has to win all of them.

4. Jason Garrett
Is Jason Garrett's job safe if the Cowboys miss the playoffs? He's the reigning NFL Coach of the Year and has to go through a stretch of six games without the team's best player. Both, along with his relationship with Jerry Jones make it seem like he will return in 2018.
But what if Jones has had enough? What if he no longer thinks Garrett can get the job done? It's clear on social media what the fans think. They're ready to move on. I'm not so sure Jones is, though. Depending on how they finish this season, however, could change his mind.

The Cowboys’ problems aren’t bad when compared to some other teams, but it became pretty clear over the course of Sunday night’s game that they need a big improvement to get back to the Eagles’ level.
Dallas needed to win Sunday. Instead, on their home turf, they got embarrassed by a much better team. They have to rally for a Thanksgiving game in a few days, and that will be hard to do considering any realistic dreams of having a special season ended in the second half Sunday.

Dak struggled mightily. The good news is that his All-Pro left tackle could return the next time he suits up.
Life without Tyron Smith, Week 2
Several good-news nuggets. First, a week after getting sacked eight times by the Falcons, Prescott went down just four times on Sunday night. Part of the reason: The Cowboys replaced left tackle Chaz Green, who was summarily abused by Adrian Clayborn in Week 10, with Byron Bell. Bell was serviceable, which makes him a Hall of Famer compared to Green.
Second, Smith, who has battled a groin injury, hopes to play this Thursday when the Cowboys host the Chargers on Thanksgiving.

This was Prescott's worst night as a pro. While two games against last year's NFC champs (Falcons) and the team with the NFL's best record (Eagles) is a small sample, life without Ezekiel Elliott has proved quite unpleasant for Dak.
In Atlanta, the Cowboys' only touchdown came on a Prescott run in a 27-7 loss in which he was sacked eight times and lost two fumbles. Before the national Sunday night TV audience, Prescott turned the ball over four more times.
"Some decisions he made with the football hurt us,'' coach Jason Garrett said. "He's a competitor, he'll keep fighting.''

The Dallas first-half defense - The Cowboys were held in this game by an outstanding defensive effort in the first half which got numerous stops, and allowed 0 points after two Dak Prescott interceptions early. They gave the team hope, but the offense could never get enough going to really threaten the Eagles. Granted, they fell apart in the second half, but for a moment they made it a game.
The third quarter continues to be a disaster, though.
Cowboys third quarters - Our own Michael Strawn wrote an article this week about how the the third quarter has been a killer for Dallas this year. How prophetic. The Cowboys came out in the second half and immediately gave up two long touchdown drives, without answering them on offense, effectively ending the game.
