Off the field, Dak Prescott is making a difference, and Taco Charlton is cashing in on his name.
Cowboys Defensive Lineman David Irving Officially Gets Four-Game Suspension In 2017 - Dave Halprin, Blogging The Boys
We all knew it was coming, it's just official now.
The NFL has ruled on David Irving’s appeal of a suspension for an over-the-counter supplement, and the news is not good. Irving will be suspended for the first four games of the 2017 season. He will miss games against the New York Giants, the Denver Broncos, the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams. Irving will be able to return for the Week 5 game against the Green Bay Packers.
To the surprise of no one, another Cowboys player got suspended - Brandon Lee Gowton, Bleeding Green Nation
More evidence that the Eagles' fan base defines itself by what happens with the Cowboys. And they picked an odd measuring stick for things, given, you know, zero rings for them.
The Dallas Cowboys have more suspensions in the past two years than they do Super Bowl rings in franchise history.
David Irving suspension all but promises spot for Damontre Moore - Patrik Walker, 247 Sports
The Irving suspension means that there will be one more spot on the defensive line for the first four weeks of the season. And one player is poised to take full advantage.
There's potential secret weapon hiding in the rotation, however, whose ticket to the 53 may have gotten stamped the moment the NFL rendered its verdict on Irving.
His name is Damontre Moore.
Vote For Dak and Zeke Nominated for Top ESPYS Awards - Taylor Stern, Dallas Cowboys
Check out the article for how you can vote for Zeke and Dak.
The annual ESPYS nominations have been announced, no surprise Cowboys’ 2016 rookie sensations Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott are up for two of the top awards.
How Dak Prescott is handling his rise to stardom with Cowboys and using it to do good - while also cashing in - Kate Hairopoulos, SportsDay
Being the face of the Cowboys is going to be very lucrative for Prescott - but he has some other, very important priorities.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott says he's going to hit a beach somewhere and relax in Los Angeles before training camp starts in July.
But in the meanwhile, it's been evident that Prescott is more visible -- and marketable -- than ever as he comes off his first season as the starting quarterback of America's Team and moves toward his first full season as the unquestioned face of the franchise.
He appeared on Good Morning America Wednesday morning -- couldn't miss him in that sharp, bright jacket. It was just the start of a full day of media appearances. The focus of the day was to promote immuno-oncology, which pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb says is a rapidly advancing area of cancer research. Of course, fighting cancer is a meaningful cause to Prescott, who lost his mother, Peggy, to the disease while he was a college student. His off-field story always comes back to her.
Dak Prescott embraces expectation of Super Bowl titles - Charean Williams, ProFootballTalk
Dak Prescott set the NFL world on its ear with his stunning rookie season. He is a lot of things, but complacent about his debut isn't one.
“It wasn’t a win,” Prescott told Mike Florio on PFT Live on Wednesday. “To me, a season is only qualified as a win if you win that last game. That’s what the Patriots were. They were the one winners of this past season. For me, it was a good start. For the team, it was a good start with young guys coming in, but it’s not where we want to be. We want to be playing in that last game of the season. We know what it takes to get there, and that’s what we’ve done this offseason is work our tails off to try to put ourselves in that position.”
Cowboys rookie Taco Charlton lands sponsorship deal with Mexican restaurant - Vikram Bodas, Yahoo Sports
It was inevitable. (Disclaimer: I love me some Taco Bueno.)
Highly sought after by several eateries around the country for potential marketing opportunities surrounding his name, Dallas-Fort Worth based chain Taco Bueno came out on top for the services of the former Michigan Wolverine and 28th overall selection in the 2017 draft.
“At the heart of any good partnership is authenticity and genuine respect,” Taco Bueno president and CEO Mike Roper said in a statement. “Taco is serious about football, and we are serious about Tex-Mex, and that is a winning combination. We couldn’t be more excited to bring some fun to all our fans this upcoming football season.”
How All 32 NFL Teams Handle Analytics vs. Old School - Albert Breer, The MMQB with Peter King
Analytics is a growing trend in the NFL, and in the second part of his look at how it is influencing the league, Breer has this evaluation of how Dallas is using them.
The Cowboys have quietly been leaders in analytics, to the point where personnel chief Will McClay—who has a traditional scouting and coaching background—served as the team’s director of football research as a precursor to his current job as senior director of college/pro scouting. COO Stephen Jones is all-in, too. Dallas was one of the first NFL teams to implement the Catapult player tracking system that Chip Kelly used at Oregon, and the team hired data scientist Tom Robinson to take McClay’s old spot with plans to add staff underneath him. Coach Jason Garrett, too, has been a driver in making Dallas one of the organizations more open to the changing landscape.
NFL 100: Cowboys had 4 players ranked the highest at their positions - Kevin Modisette, Cowboys Wire
Whatever you may think of the NFL 100 ranking of players, it is of note that four Cowboys were seen as the best in the league at their position by their peers.
Ezekiel Elliott was the highest ranked Cowboy, coming in at No. 7 and the top running back in the NFL. Not only was Zeke the highest ranked running back, but he was the highest ranked rookie as well. Clearly the Cowboys were right in picking him so high in the 2016 draft.
The other Cowboys who were ranked as the highest at their position were the big three on the offensive line. left tackle Tyron Smith came in at No. 18, right guard Zack Martin at No. 58, and center Travis Frederick No. 87. It’s especially impressive for Frederick to make the list since he plays a less heralded position, and he is the only center to be ranked.
Derek Dooley on Terrance Williams' best trait, why the sky is still the limit for Dez Bryant - Jon Machota, SportsDay
Machota and Brandon George talked with wide receivers coach Derek Dooley about the WR corps. He had this to say about where Dez Bryant is going into training camp.
On where Dooley has seen Bryant improve this offseason:
"The first thing is, he was here. For the last two offseasons, he hasn't had an offseason since 2014 because after 2014 he had the contract deal and then in 2015 he was hurt, so this was his first time to get out here and develop a level of consistency. I think he's benefited from it. His route-running, his route detail, his inventory, all of those things are improving. And he's got a lot to improve on. He knows it, but he's getting better."
Which Giants will threaten Cowboys most in Week 1? Add this guy disrupting Dak Prescott to list - Jori Epstein, SportsDay
The Cowboys open the season against the New York Giants (again). SportsDay interviewed Giants beat writer Dan Duggan about what the Cowboys can expect. if this point is correct, the G-men may be underestimating how much Dak Prescott has grown.
How do you expect the Giants pass rush to fare vs. Dak Prescott this season?
Duggan: I’d expect the Giants to deploy a similar game plan to the one they used successfully against Prescott last season. They’ll mix up their defensive looks and try to bring pressure from different spots to confuse the young quarterback. It will be key for Pierre-Paul and Vernon to generate a pass rush because the Giants aren’t going to want to blitz often.
20 Questions: Which Undrafted Rookie Has Best Chance To Make Roster? - Dallas Cowboys staff
The writers at the mothership considered which UDFAs might break onto the 53 man roster this year. David Helman doesn't think the odds are very good for any of them.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say there won’t be one in 2017. That’s a pretty bold prediction, given this team’s success in finding undrafted talents like Cole Beasley, Ron Leary and Jeff Heath just in the past few years. But the numbers just don’t work out very well this year. It’s hard to imagine an undrafted rookie cracking the 53-man roster at quarterback, wide receiver, defensive line, or defensive back. Perhaps Nate Theaker or Dan Skipper can earn a spot on the offensive line, but that’s arguably the deepest position on the team. Jahad Thomas is another intriguing talent, but he’ll be facing stiff competition from the likes of Alfred Morris and Rod Smith, who already have the edge of experience. This is a deep roster, and I’m not going to be surprised if the veterans hold off the undrafted rookies this summer.
