From Zeke to Dak to ticket sales, here are the latest Dallas Cowboys links!
NFL's best QB? National writer's crystal ball says it could be Dak Prescott in the near future - SportsDay
After a historic rookie campaign in which he took the sports world by storm, can Dak Prescott become even better going forward? One NFL writer from a panel of ESPN experts says he’ll “go out on a limb” and say Prescott could be the best signal caller in the NFL in the future.
But senior writer Mike Sando went off on his own by choosing Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.
"I'll go out on a limb and say it could be Dak Prescott," Sando said. "It's too early to anoint him but not too early to think about the possibilities based on his impressive rookie season."
The Prescott nod wasn't the only big prediction on the list involving the Cowboys offense. NFL insider Dan Graziano also pegged Dallas as the team who will have the most sustained success on offense over the next five seasons.
"Why not Dallas? No one has a stronger combination of great young offensive line, mega-stud running back and ultrapromising young quarterback," said Graziano.
Five keys to the Dallas Cowboys’ Super Bowl dreams - Drew Davison, Star-Telegram
If the Cowboys want to hoist the Lombardi Trophy for the sixth time in the franchise’s rich history, Davison writes that the ‘Boys will go as far as Dak takes them.
Dak’s team
The Tony Romo era is over, marking the official transition to Dak Prescott. Most pros make their biggest jump from the first to second year, which means the sky’s the limit for Prescott, who is coming off one of the best rookie seasons by a quarterback in league history.
He completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 3,667 yards with 23 touchdowns and four interceptions. He had a 104.9 passer rating for the season.
But the Cowboys also don’t have a security blanket such as Romo waiting in the wings. This team is going to go as far as Prescott can take them.
Philadelphia Eagles opponent preview: Will the Cowboys give the NFC East a repeat champ? - Aaron Kasinitz, Penn Live
Eagles writer Aaron Kasinitz takes a look at whether or not the Cowboys will be the first team to repeat as NFC East champs in more than a decade.
The Cowboys’ strength starts up front, where left tackle Tyron Smith and center Kyle [sic] Frederick lead one of the NFL’s most revered offensive lines, and it extends to their young playmakers. Dak Prescott finished last season with the best passer rating for a rookie in NFL history, while another first-year player, Ezekiel Elliott, led the league in rushing.
A few areas of concern exist on Dallas’ defense, though. The Cowboys struggled to pressure quarterbacks last year and lost a few key defensive backs this offseason, without tabbing top-notch replacements.
Still, linebacker Sean Lee helps hold the unit together, giving many Dallas fans and national pundits confidence that Cowboys are building a juggernaut — one that could cause the Eagles trouble for years to come.
Ezekiel Elliott suspension would set up every single NFL player for blackmail - OCC, Blogging The Boys
Despite not being charged by police, Dallas Cowboys All-Pro running back Ezekiel Elliott still has to fear of suspension. Why? Well, because of the NFL. BTB’s One.Cool.Customer writes on why this situation can affect other players in the NFL.
Effectively, any acquaintance with a grudge - or with a need for cash - will be handed a weapon by the league in case of an Elliott suspension based on the DV allegation.
The NFL is likely aware of the precedent they would set with an Elliott suspension based on the alleged domestic violence charges. Which is why, if a suspension is eventually handed down, it will likely be based on some kind of “conduct detrimental” language that will not explicitly mention domestic violence as the reason for the suspension, but will contain language that will imply it.
Because hiding behind some legalese mumbo-jumbo is exactly the way Roger Goodell likes to weasel his way out of a tough spot.
Drama brings back good memories - Clarence Hill, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Hill writes that the Dallas Cowboys have the pieces to potentially go on a Super Bowl run: Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and the monstrous offensive line. However, the NFL’s handling of Zeke may derail any hopes.
Of course, the story that seemingly won't ever die and the one that could potentially ruin hopes of the Cowboys of making a title run is the NFL's investigation of Elliott.
He has been in the eye of the storm ever since a former girlfriend accused him of domestic violence in July 2016. Last September, Columbus, Ohio, prosecutors closed the case because of conflicting information and inconsistent evidence.
All along Elliott has maintained his innocence.
But roughly a year later, he remains under investigation by the NFL.
There are those on the Cowboys who believe the league is trying to offset its mishandling of past domestic violence issues by taking a fine-tooth comb to Elliott's case.
And thus we have Friday's report of sorts from ESPN that "there is a growing feeling that Elliott could face a short suspension."
Elliott Suspension Or Not, Darren McFadden Critical to Cowboys’ Offense - Sean Martin, Inside The Star
Yesterday, BTB’s Danny Phantom wrote that people shouldn’t forget about Alfred Morris. What will Darren McFadden’s role be in 2017?
McFadden can do everything Zeke Elliott can do to an extent that keeps Dak Prescott and the Cowboys’ passing game ahead of schedule. He will hit the correct holes in the line with some burst and finish strong at the second level, occasionally showing off the extra gear to hit on big gains to the outside. DMC can also catch the ball smoothly out of the backfield and turn up field quickly to maximize every reception.
For a team fully expecting to play 18 games between September 10th and February, this role for Darren McFadden was always going to be embraced by the Cowboys and loathed by opposing defenses that will in fact have to deal with Elliott along with McFadden wearing into them for four quarters.
Who's gone? Who's still here? A recap of the Cowboys' offseason roster shuffle - SportsDay
What moves have the Cowboys made this offseason? Who is returning to the Big D? Who left?
Who stayed in Dallas?
There was a long list of potential free agents heading into the offseason for the Cowboys. Here's the list of players who decided to stick around:
NOTES: Kellen Moore returns and is set to be Dak Prescott's backup. Despite the presence of Ezekiel Elliott, McFadden returns and is ready to help any way he can. Irving will miss the season's first four games due to suspension.
Cowboys add pre-camp workout for rookies, face new cut-down date - David Humphrey, Star-Telegram
Training camp is quickly approaching, which means roster cuts isn’t too far way, either. Earlier this offseason, the NFL owners voted that their will only be one cut-down following the preseason, opposed to the previous two.
In May, NFL owners voted to eliminate the first cut-down period to 75 before the final preseason game. That means there will be only one cut after the preseason, from a 90-man roster to a 53-man roster. The roster reduction must be completed by 3 p.m. on Sept. 3.
“I think it’s a good thing for everybody. Where it will make its biggest impact is when we get to that point,” Garrett said. “Oftentimes, when you get down to cut the 75, you don’t necessarily cut the worst players on your team. Sometimes you keep who aren’t as good a player, but they’re going to play a lot of snaps at a particular position in the game two nights later.
“To me, it made sense. It made sense to a lot of players.”
Rico Gathers views Jason Witten as competition, looks to learn from the savvy veteran - RJ Ochoa, Blogging The Boys
How good can Rico Gathers be? Ochoa writes on Gathers’ mindset about potentially replacing “Gold Jacket Witt”.
Behind Witten we’ve got Geoff Swaim and James Hanna, both coming off of seasons in which they suffered injuries that ended their seasons (Hanna’s occurring well before Swaim’s). Beyond that trifecta exists a fourth option resembling a bit of a unicorn as far as football players are concerned.
Rico Gathers used to play basketball and he is physically built in a way that allows him to really score in the paint. He’s about a billion feet tall and conceivably a redzone threat worthy of any offense. Is he the heir to Witten’s throne as TE1 in Dallas? Rico himself understands the stakes here and seems prepared to do something about them.
Cardinals ticket sales get boost from Cowboys, Raiders - KTAR
The brand of the Dallas Cowboys is huge. The Cardinals are witnessing that first hand as they see their ticket sales rise with the Cowboys coming to town for Monday Night Football in September.
According to Vivid Seats (via Phoenix Business Journal), the resale market for Cardinals tickets is up 22 percent for the regular season compared to a season ago and ranks second — behind the Dallas Cowboys and ahead of the Oakland Raider — in tickets sold.
It helps, then, that Arizona is playing Dallas at University of Phoenix Stadium on Sept. 25 for a primetime Monday Night Football matchup. That game against the Cowboys ranked as the fourth most-in-demand game in the NFL for the 2017 season.
