Cowboys Free Agent Signee Nolan Carroll Arrested For DWI - DannyPhantom, Blogging The Boys

The Cowboys' defense may take another hit, as the arrest of Nolan Carroll for DWI could carry a two game suspension under current NFL rules.

Early Monday morning, Carroll was arrested for on a charge of suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Carroll has been somewhat of an afterthought when it comes to how a lot of fans see the cornerback depth shaping up. With three draft picks invested in that position, a lot of people are anxious to see the new guys in action. That time will come, but the rookies won't just be thrown into action. Last week in OTA's, Carroll was part of the starting cornerback group alongside Orlando Scandrick and Anthony Brown. The Cowboys coaches still see Carroll as a part of this group despite the young talent they have brought on board.

Nolan Carroll’s Arrest Creates Added Uncertainty For Cowboys’ Secondary - David Helman, Dallas Cowboys
Not a great start for Carroll in Dallas. At all.

It’s currently unclear what Carroll’s arrest means going forward. But one way or another, it’s an added headache for a team that has faced questions about the cornerback position since last season ended.

The team also focused on the secondary with several of their other draft picks. Before they picked Lewis, they drafted Colorado corner Chidobe Awuzie in the second round. They also spent sixth-round picks on safety Xavier Woods and cornerback Marquez White.

As barren as the position looked earlier this spring, depth is no longer an issue in the Cowboys’ secondary – though off-field issues like Carroll’s certainly won’t help.

After "Worst Time Of My Life," Tapper Grateful To Be Back Competing At DE - Rob Phillips, Dallas Cowboys
Debilitating back pain arrived quickly, suddenly, the week of Charles Tapper’s NFL preseason debut. Little did he know his rookie year had ended before it started.

"It kind of threw me all the way back, set me back emotionally and physically where I just had to depend on the guys in the locker room and a bunch of my family to really keep me going," Tapper said. "Me loving the game also kept me going.

"Even being a little kid I never missed a whole year of anything in my life. For me to miss a whole year of football, it was like, man, I missed a whole year of my life."

Reports Of Dez Bryant’s Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated - Joseph.Hatz, Blogging The Boys
Dez Bryant is still among the league’s elite, he just needs to stay on the field to prove it.

In hindsight, it was a mistake. Anybody that watched Bryant play during that time could tell that he wasn’t his usual self or 100%. This isn’t revisionist history or making excuses, he simply wasn’t moving as he normally would. Just a few days after the season ended in January of 2016 Bryant had a second surgery, this time on both his foot and ankle, and was in a walking boot for over a month.

While Tony Romo has yet to officially retire, the Cowboys have not issued his No. 9 to a player or let anyone move into his old locker.

Cowboys QBs coach Wade Wilson on Dak Prescott: 'Nothing is too big for that kid' - Jon Machota, SportsDay
QB Coach Wade Wilson held court recently to discuss the quarterback, Dak Prescott's approach to the offseason.

"There has been no complacency at all. He had a phenomenal rookie year. He's been out here working the whole offseason and taking over a little bit more of a leadership role this year that's kind of innate with the position but it is his personality as well and the guys are really responding to that."

The 2017 Jets in one player: Total confidence in sea of red flags - Mark Cannizaro, New York Post
To date, Morris Claiborne might not have come close to touching the potential he had as the sixth-overall draft pick in 2012 by the Cowboys.

"I feel like I can be the No. 1 corner in this league if I’m healthy … when I’m healthy,’’ Claiborne told The Post after his first OTA practice as a Jet earlier this week. "When I’m out there playing and I’m healthy and I’m on my game, I don’t feel like there is anybody better than me.’’

Scouting The Schedule: Talented D-Line Just Part Of Chiefs’ Balanced Roster - Bryan Broaddus, Dallas Cowboys
Over the next two weeks, Bryan Broaddus will preview what to expect from all 13 of their upcoming opponents. The series continues with Week 9 and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Most Favorable Matchup: Eric Fisher was the first overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft but hasn’t always lived up to that lofty position. He is the starter at left tackle. Holder/grabber as a blocker. Will struggle with his sustain. Base tends to get real narrow. If he’s not holding, he’s not blocking. Doesn’t really adjust all that well in space. Will give up the corner when a rusher attacks it. Has trouble extending his hands to slow his man down.

Statistics Suggest Cowboys Ryan Switzer Could Have Two Punt Return TDs & Who They Should Come Against - DannyPhantom, Blogging The Boys
Will Ryan Switzer re-vamp the Cowboys punting game? Here are some statistics that could help dial in some reasonable expectations for the Cowboys new returner.

Enter Ryan Switzer.

The North Carolina wide receiver burst on the scene his freshmen year with 24 punt returns for 502 yards with an average of 20.9 yards per return. He also had five returned for a touchdown. Opposing teams eventually learned that kicking to Switzer was not wise and by his senior year, he only had 16 opportunities to return punts.

National writer: The best-kept secret on the Dallas Cowboys roster is... - SportsDay Staff
Byron Jones was ranked Dallas' best-kept secret in Bleacher Report's list of each team's underrated weapons.

Bleacher Report goes on to say Jones and the Cowboys face "sky-high" expectations this season - Super Bowl or bust. Jones doesn't lack talent.

"The third-year pro has the athleticism and versatility that NFL defenses crave on the back end; the physicality to play safety and the speed to play corner," Davenport said. "Jones piled up 88 stops with an interception last year in 16 starts. Dallas will be looking for an even bigger and better season this year."

Why ESPN, Morning News laid off its writers - Richard Deitsch, SI.com
ESPN laid off both its Dallas Cowboys reporters and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram laid off one, despite them being the most-watched team in the U.S.

That the Cowboys sit near the top of the sports public consciousness made for an odd juxtaposition when the news came down that three prominent and award-winning sports reporters with long ties to covering the Cowboys—Jean-Jacques Taylor (ESPN), Ed Werder (ESPN) and Charean Williams (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)—were part of layoffs at their organizations. Frankly, it makes no sense on face. Why would you let go of experienced reporters with deep contacts and insight into arguably the most popular team in professional sports?
